I really really really wish that they push the grind on the PITS back to the "guard". They way it is now just seems like someone forgot to grind it all the way back...its seriously annoying even to look at.

Other than that seems a very cool little knife.
This is to comply with the UK legal carry laws which require the cutting edge to be less than 3 inches long. The edge could in theory be taken up to the finger guard in the US.

Spyderco 2014 Production Sample Video – Peter Carey Rubicon

#22

Post by Mr Blonde »

Spyderco’s Eric Glesser presents the Rubicon, designed by Peter Carey. This was really the proverbial custom quality folder. I am sure this knife will become a big hit.

I realize the tag says 'production prototype', but the information I got from Spyderco indicated that the Rubicon seen here was a 'production sample'.

Agreed on all accounts! Brings to mind the complaints with Barong grind. In comparison the Slysz Bowie seems better in this regard.

I've been championing an integral compression lock as my favorite, but would take it with back lock too.

It'd be interesting to flame color the scales or /and try stonewashing.

That Rubicon looks great. Kind of reminds me of a folding Schempp Rock. But that clip, ugh! I really don't like overly fancy clips, especially wide ones with swooshy curves, and holes, etc. Oh well, I'll still be getting one!

And of course, the Dogtag is a chisel grind.... only for it to be on the wrong side. I just can't catch a break....

Put simply, it means that the ones shipped to customers should look exactly like the one pictured. While if it was a prototype, even a production prototype, there could still be changes prior to production.

Oh my the Rubicon looks amazing! Definitely on my to-buy list! Also the Dogtag and Chubby. And the PITS too. Maybe I should just make a list of knives I don't want.

Didn't love the rubicon in the stills, but that action definitely looks crisp as can be. Bowie still numero uno for me!

Spyderco 2014 Prototype Video – Ed Schempp Frontier

#33

Post by Mr Blonde »

The last Spyderco prototype I got on video this year, is the Ed Schempp Frontier. This knife was my number one favorite of all the prototypes Spyderco showed this year. This Ed Schempp design will be a great addition to the Spyderco series of ethnic folders. Eric Glesser from Spyderco gives a quick tour of this knife at the IWA Show in Germany.

Thx Wouter! Although this is one that won't get on my list, to much other stuff on it already. Nevertheless this is an amazing knife, the brass bolsters are sweet. Very nice tribute to the classic bowie!

I wonder how the Frontier would work choked up or in hammer grip using the choil? The way Eric held it, it looked ergonomic, but what do you use a knife for gripped like this, besides poking at something?

The edge is lowered, making it a great slicer on plates or cutting boards. In a choked up grip, I recall the knife being surprisingly ergonomic. The top part of the 's-guard' didn't seem to affect my grip when choked up on the blade.

Thanks Wouter! Ed's designs are usually well thought out, but since I have used the Rock Salt (which has a sharp hump on top of the trademark hole) I was a bit worried about how the knife would feel choked up.

Of course, the true test of the ergos of the Frontier is when I get to put a production version in my pocket for a few weeks. My first impressions of handling and playing with the knife for a few minutes was very positive.
