DMT sharpening stones for the Edge pro.

#1

Post by Forrest »

Hey guys, I was wondering if it would be possible to cut down their 2 inch by 6 inch stone in half to make a 1 inch by 6 inch stone so that it is easier to handle and not so limited to just larger knives without bellies. if anyone has done this, can you please post a picture of the final product? and my final question is, is the Dmt stone its self too hard to cut in half? my guess is that its on a piece of aluminum and the diamonds cant be completely protecting that aluminum plate its on.... any help would be appreciated.

P.s: I know they have atoma stones, however they are just waaaay too expensive for me and it would be literally almost 3 times cheaper to cut a DMT in half if at all possible.

I sometimes use my 2"x6" DMT stones on the EP as is. I had to do a bit of "rigging" to ensure they would not fall out of the stone clamps. My DMT 2x6 stones have abrasive on both sides so I can't use the normal blanks for the EP. But, they are way too heavy for my desires. They are a bit awkward for smaller knives also but it is possible. Now I only use them for larger knives that need a lot of work since I have other stones.

Cutting them in half would require a bit more than just cutting them. The cut side on the diamond side would need to be cleaned up I'd think or it would be rough. I almost wouldn't think it possible but I'm not a machinist with proper tools or experience.

I've never tried Atoma's because for me also they are just too expensive. If I still had all the money I've spent on EP stones, moldmasters and Shapton glass I could probably buy a set of Atomas. But I love the Shaptons glass stones. I emailed and phoned DMT a few years ago and asked them about making stones for the EP. The corrogated stones they have in bench stones and the 4.25" size for the aligner. These stones are very light. A 6" stone on a blank would be great I think. I even used my 4" DMT stones glued to a blank on my EP. They work fine but are a little short. But, they DO work well. If you really want some light diamond stones for the EP get a 4 stone set of DMT aligner stones, make blanks for them, get enought copper tube (between handle and stone holder) to make the EP hold 4" stones and use them. I've done it and I liked using them since there isn't a 6" option from DMT and I don't have the Atomas. The guys at DMT told me they were considering making a size for the EP. But the last time I inquired about it I was told they had put that idea on a back burner. Don't know what they are thinking or doing now.

From what I've read from all, every single one, of the people who have used the Atomas they are worth the extra money. The only issue is HAVING the extra money. :) Or even justifying the extra money. I don't think any of us have car problems or house problems or lawn problems or not enough sharpening stone problems. We just have money problems. As in not enough. :)
