Meant for stabbing! :D In our prisons the inmates make what are called "Shanks". They are make-shift stabbing instruments made from anything rigid that can be made into a point!(Toothbrushes, pieces of wood, metal, or even wound wetted, then dried toilet paper for example) A tactical pen is a shank in an emergency!

Do they actually write though? And are they really necessary? I mean really, you can stab with a regular pen...eric m. wrote:Meant for stabbing! :D

Some have a less lethal blunt end and pointed end(for use as a stabbing weapon) while others have two blunt ends so as not to penetrate and intended for use as an impact weapon and is based on the kubotan/persuader baton, but more politically friendly and legal since it is not only a purpose built weapon, but also a working pen.
They do. I have a Hinderer Investigator (copper) It's a great little pen. If you want something larger, there's an Extreme Duty. Both are nice pens. Look great. Write well. I doubt I have the skills to use it as a self defense tool. Heck, I barely have the skills to use it as a penOfficer Gigglez wrote:Do they actually write though? And are they really necessary? My bro and I have those too :) . The Investigator is nice and small but still fairly tough in hand. The Extreme is a big chunk of awesome. In copper or brass they are about 2.5/5oz respectively.kbuzbee wrote:They do. I have a Hinderer Investigator (copper) It's a great little pen. If you want something larger, there's an Extreme Duty. They all write. Most use either the Fisher Space Pen refill, or the Parker refill and its clones and, IMHO, both of those write very well. If you like the feel of a fairly fat and fairly heavy pen that offers enough traction that you don't have to hold tightly while writing, some of them might be of interest even if, like me, you'd never think of using one as a kubaton.Officer Gigglez wrote:Do they actually write though? Pens over-engineered for durability so you can use them in a defensive scenario, if you live in a backwards corner of the world where decent citizens are not legally allowed to own more suitable self-defense tools.

I had a Timberline Lightfoot. These were some of the first of the genre. Wrote great and would have worked perfectly in a pinch. Then I had two separate strangers make comments about my tac pen, and the fact that TSA is wise to them, I traded it...for a Spyderco. Zebra makes good pens that are sanitized and would work fine.
By backwoods corner of the world, I assume you mean NYC?Monocrom wrote:Pens over-engineered for durability so you can use them in a defensive scenario, if you live in a backwards corner of the world where decent citizens are not legally allowed to own more suitable self-defense tools.
NYC being a place that doesn't like good people having any right to defend themselves.

If I am in a situation where I need a pen to defend myself...I will be like, "Hey, who do I make the check out to?"

I agree, bwahahahaha. I would prefer steel toed really nice work shoes for an NPE weapon. As a matter of fact I would buy really nice looking biz casual steel toes. I work in the sales end of a very blue collar industry and being on a freight dock or in a warehouse is always a danger to feet...and you can kick the **** out of things :)Screwdriver wrote:If I am in a situation where I need a pen to defend myself...I will be like, "Hey, who do I make the check out to?"
