Looking for a PlainEdge Spydie

#1

Post by Mac-the-nife »

Hello Everyone,

I'm new here, but after reading the different posts on the forum over the past two months, I can see spydie has a great family here. And I'm proud to become a part of it.

On to my question. I'm in the market for a PlainEdge Spydie. I have my name on the list for the next release of the Forum Military model (can't wait). But I'm looking for another one to add to the collection. I have my eye on either the Viele or the J.D. Smith. I've seen a lot of posts on the Viele but not many on the J.D. Smith. I realise that these are two different types of Spydies but I guess I'm looking for the pros and cons of each and which I should put my money down on first. So if anyone out there can help with my dilemma, I would be most greatful.

Thanks,

You're in trouble! The updated Viele is one sweet knife--premium materials (VG-10 & micarta), non-scary profile blade but sneaky tactical, not too "big" and not too "small" overall length. If you're right-handed there's a nice thumb shelf; if you're left-handed, you might want to consider another model (it's difficult for left-handed openings). Recommendation (assuming you're right-handed): Buy it (plain edge, of course)!

The original J.D. Smith has been one of my favorite everyday carry knife (until replaced by the updated Viele). Nice blade profile, good handle ergonomics and use of micarta, not too scary looking (elegant stilleto-like), and slim carry. There has been some critcism about the manufacturing tolerances but I feel that it is immaterial when you look at the overall package and its price. I'm looking forward to seeing the upgrade (VG-10 blade) coming out this year. Recommendation: You may want to wait for the upgrade and make your own comparison before you buy. If you cannot wait for the upgrade, then you could consider buying the original (plain edge, of course)--even if Spyderco wasn't coming out with an upgrade I'd be happy with the original "as is."

Nice problem to have, eh? Bottom Line: Put your money down on the Viele first and wait for the upgraded J.D. Smith. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Hey Toothed,
Sounds like from the information you have offered, you have a pretty good plan. Thanks for the input. Do you know when this year the new J.D. Smith is going to be available?

Cheers,

dear Mac,
The time is now. The upgraded c58s are here . I just got a small shipment of them, and they look great! Sharpness, blade finish, action, fit and finish, all vastly superior to the last run. BE THE FIRST ON YOUR BLOCK!!
