Paramilitary 2 rust resistance?

#1

Post by Spydieguy »

Hey guys. After being bitten by the bug a few years ago, I've finally decided to buy a pm2. I'm sure it's an amazing knife, but I've found that I sometimes have issues with my knives rusting in my pocket. It's usually my Kershaws that rust, which I blame the bead blast finish for. Now lately I've been getting black coated blades so they won't rust, and I know the pm2 comes with a black blade. Unfortunately, though, the black version is $40 more expensive than the satin blade on amazon. So I was wondering if anyone's had experience with the satin blade on the pm2, and if it rusts. Thanks for the help guys!

I have a Sage 1, which has the same steel, and I've had no trouble. I carry it clipped in my pocket, though, not IWB or loose in my pocket. There is one small rust spot in the opening hole, but that's it.

That's good to know. Do you ever oil your blades? And do you carry the sage tip up or tip down?

I live directly in front of the ocean in Costa Rica, and I carry all my knives iwb. I own s30v in both coated and satin and have had no rust issues with either.

P.S. I love the DLC coated pm2. It should not be $40 more though!! Be patient and look around at the major dealers. I've seen pm2s popping up weekly from $105-$115. You should be able to get the DLC version under 130.

The Para2 should do nicely but with sweat and residue from cutting things can rust up. Anything can really (except oddities like H1). Occasionally cleaning and putting some mineral oil in it would help. Something like Tuf-Cloth would be even better.

The Sage line is tip-up L or R clip orientation.

On amazon the dlc pm2 is $170. I'm not sure why it's so expensive, but I can only order on amazon since I don't have a credit card :(

Ouch. That's a pretty big premium. I think cheaper ones pop up on amazon from time to time.

Wow I didn't even know that the pm2 was discontinued. Anybody have any idea why? And is there any planned replacement of the pm2?

Is there any reason the pm2 is getting more expensive? Are the materials changing?

I don't think its really getting more expensive, it's just not readily available. So sometimes the only ones you can find are the more expensive offerings. When the other sites/shops get them in stock they are still offering them at normal prices.

I don't think they are. They've been popping up in that range (and higher) since they came out due to the shortage.

edit: Price tracking seems to confirm this http://camelcamelcamel.com/Spyderco-Par ... B004W2XO1Y

In all your opinions, is the pm2 worth $170? Like I said before I've always wanted one, so if it's worth it I may just go for it. I'm good at spending money :D

Sigh...I hate paying a premium for stuff. However...it is a great knife. It is a truly great knife. If you have no other option for buying one from a cheaper vendor, any if you can afford it and won't be bothered if you see one pop up next week for $130 then I say buy it and enjoy it. If it's any comfort, lots of people have paid that kind of price over the last year.

I appreciate your help, ringo. It sounds like it's worth it. I just wonder why there's been a shortage of pm2's lately. I know about a year ago when I first started looking pm2's were a little over $100.

Paras have been in slow supply ever since it came out, not recently. The price fluctuates up and down. If you're willing to just keep an eye out for a couple months, I'm sure you can pick it up cheaper. Really the question is if the wait is worth the additional cost for you.

I would wait or put a preorder in with a company you want to support. I hate paying more than necessary to a shop that I don't respect.

Ps: Costs increasing will result in inflated manufacturer MSRP. Don't think a few greedy sellers are running Spyderco.

In doing some research on the paramilitary 2 I saw that some people have been having problems with the stop pin rusting. Anyone have any experience with this?

That's the only place mine ever showed any surface corrosion, but i was able to wipe it away with cloth and wd40.

P.s. Yup, glad you waited. I watch them go up and down on amazon, depending which vendor has them in stock. Glad u got lucky. Go ahead and grab one because they don't last!

Well I just ordered my first spyderco! I got the pm2 with the dlc coated blade and the digi camo scales. This is definitely going to be a long week waiting for it to come in :p
