That's fantastic.

Nice to see something other than a skull adorning a lanyard.

I got mine in the other day. Compared to my other stainless steel one, the spring is strong and there is more friction. It opens slowly like a persian and the lockup feels strong like a police or ulize.

My stainless lava when I release the lock, the blade will fall to closed. This blue one doesn't budge and it takes a pretty strong swing to get it to move.

Maybe it will loosen up.

I notice the same thing. The blade movement is definitely stiffer of my G-10 Lava. I'd say fit and finish, and lockup are better on my stainless too.

Mine was also very tight. I was able to loosten up the pivot enough so it would drop when unlocked without introducing any blade play.

the spyderco lava is one of the most underrated spydercos in my opinion, i actually just joined right now so i can beg sal to make a regular production version in black frn, this is such well thought out design for a pocket knife.

i think a larger version of this knife would work well too.

Finally broke down and ordered one...haha

I always wondered why they picked blue for a knife called "lava" though hahahaha. A nice red/black combo would kick ***...or some of that red/black kirinite stuff!

I'm curious to which knife dealers are currently shipping out their pre-orders? (hope I'm not passing the line for shiny footprints! If so, apologies!) I am just itching for mine to be shipped, but then again there's always that fear that you were one of those that got overbooked for pre-orders... :p

Howes had 5 in stock. Now they have 4. :p I've been waiting a while for the next batch to show up to dealers and it looks like they're arriving now. I like the blue, but may throw in some Kirinite with my next order of scale materials to take the Lava to the next, and most logical, level.

I see this is an old thread but I just got my blue Lava recently. It was stiff and "gritty", (brand new). I opened her up and discovered the washers were really rough. I smoothed them out as best I could, greased and overtightened the pivot to work it all in, loosened it back to the right amount and now she's perfect and I love the knife. I submitted my suggestion to Spyderco to make a Lava "XL". Just big enough to add 1/2'' to the blade without taking away from the design, add some titanium instead of g10 or the original stainless and an upgrade to the blade steel...

Ha it's funny: this was my old thread, and I never did end up pulling the trigger on one. Too many knives, too little pocket space.

What am I missing here?

Seems like a Dragonfly 2 with some junk in the trunk. More gripping surface?

Don't seem like there is enough blade to need that though.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Newest Spydies: S90v Ti Military, Pacific Salt and a special Kiwi.

It's very ergonomic, in many different hand positions. Designed as a defensive knife, makes you feel like it's something more than just a little knife, lol! I chose it for the ergonomics and its truly ambidextrous design, (lefty here). Also after choosing my Manix for it's ambi design I really like the leaf shaped blade. I'm not a fan of the over exaggerated spydie holes, I love the way they work but not the way they sit in pocket or in the hand when folded so the leaf design works best for me.
