Calypso Junior question

#1

Post by RanCoWeAla »

I absolutely love the Calypso, Caly 3.5 and Caly 3 and they are by far my favorite Spyderco's. My question here involves the Calypso Junior. Just recently I thought about purchasing one of those in order to have the complete family tree but in looking at pictures of the Calypso Junior it appears that the clip is set for tip down carry only. Is this really the case or were some models made for tip up carry because every picture I have seen shows tip down.

As far as I know, the Juniors, like the original Calypso, are all tip-down only.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

That's correct.

If you really like tip up carry, the Burgundy Micarta Sprint run is said to have liners and is pretty possible to have a tip up carry option.

Only time will tell on that one, though.

don't let tip down option scare you away...it's a great knife, I have 4, 2 of which I regularly work into the rotation.

Thanks for all the good information everyone. is the Burgundy Micarta Sprint Run a knife that has already been made or something that is just now in the works?

Unless they snuck it out the back door, it hasn't happened yet.

There was a burgundy FRN sprint run a few years ago. I think there is a mix up / confusion.

Hope this helps.

Also, I suggest picking any of the Caly JRs up. They are excellent.

Yes, there was a Burgundy FRN/ZDP Sprint a few years back, but Sal was talking about doing a Sprint of Micarta Calypso Jrs. as well. Since the originals are black, and they have done Burgundy Micarta in the past, it would be a logical choice for the new Sprint if and when it happens.

I did not know that. That would be awesome!

Apparently I need to visit the casual bombshell thread more often...

As stated above, the Jrs were tip down, but it is very easy to carry.

Is the second one from the top the burgundy color? Also the far right knife in xceptnl's pic? If so, very nice color! If that comes out in a sprint, micarta or FRN, it would be hard to resist. I'm tolerating tip down in my LH Millie -- I might do it for a junior as well. Also, what's the color second from the right in xceptnl's photo? (looks OD)

Yep, that's the burgundy FRN there, though the actual shade isn't quite as red as redfeenix's picture (closer to the hue of xceptnl's photo). Burgundy Micarta tends to be darker than the FRN counterpart, however. The second from the right of xceptnl's should be the black or grey Calypso Jr., as they never made it in OD. My grey Caly Jr gets regular front left pocket carry, as it's one of my few tip down knives and therefore gets frequent rotation in that pocket.

It was the grey VG-10 model and Yes, the Burgundy is beautiful.

Wow, thanks for the beautiful photography xceptnl! And I really like redfeenix's shot as well -- the background is almost identical to the wall paper in my livingroom. I love the burgundy. If they do a sprint run, I would definitely have to have one. And FRN would be fine with me. I've yet to get my first FRN knife.

I would welcome some more color in my collection. Five of my first seven Spydies are black (8th coming in green), and I think that's fine, but I'm beginning to feel like the kid in the first grade who colored all his pictures solid black. They called in a psychiatrist who examined him and ultimately learned that that was the only crayon he had :D

Those are some sweet pics Landon!!!

You're very welcome Doug! You should really look for a ZDP Caly Jr. They are amazing slicers and the burgundy color really is more aesthetically pleasing in hand than pictures.....and the pivots are unbelievably smooth like handling an AXIS BM (on the black ZDP)

I'll be on the lookout for one. I have a ZDP Caly 3.5 and am very impressed with it and also keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a Super Blue Caly 3.
