My Southard bit me

#1

Post by PMBohol »

I reached towards my right front pocket this morning and my knuckle bumped my Southard just right. The blade tip caught my knuckle. I have had some close reminders but this one drew blood.

I had removed the clip but put it back on after some light work to smooth the pointed end. I think I'll take it off again. Another good reason to get a low rider clip I guess.

Anyone else been bit by that knife tip? It is barely covered by the scales.

They say a knife only becomes yours when it bites you. It's your now. :)

Blood brothers you might say. I agree with you on that.

I just received mine last week and luckily no such incidences just yet. I guess I'm having a bit of trouble envisioning this. Had the blade come out a bit from its folded state and you hadn't noticed? I find the detent on the Southard to be absolutely stellar, but anything is possible. One thing I love about how the Southard carries is the way it naturally curves towards the seam of the pocket, giving you ample access to the pocket. I don't want to start rambling but I've just been blown away with the Southard so far. Such a fantastically well thought out design. Here's to hoping I don't get bit soon! *knocks on wood*

It really is a great knife. I have carried it since it came.

The scales on this knife barely cover the blade tip. Someone with small fingers could inadvertently get a fatty portion of their finger in there. In another instance, I was relaxing one evening in my recliner and rotating the knife between my thumb and forefinger while bouncing it off my belly and my t shirt. Later I notice a patch area where the blade tip had poked the shirt. I stopped doing that.

These examples haven't chased the knife out of my pocket yet but I just might remove the clip anyway.

I have not been bitten by my Southard but it is a risk with open construction folders, since blades are typically finished by hand and some tend to be a little longer and/or deeper than others.

I haven't been bitten by mine yet (thankfully). I put a Wicked Edge on it today and it is scary sharp.

You are probably correct on this point. It appears not everyone has this issue.

I also found out how easy it was to put a even sharper edge on this steel. A few minutes with the Sharpmaker was all it took.

I've read reports from time to time of this happening with Sebenzas, among others that I'm not remembering right at the moment.
