Anyone else learned this lesson?

Post by Concord_Bob »

When i bought my first Spiderco in the 80's I couldn't believe how different it was from the other knives on the market. This sure wasn't a barlow or trapper. One of the first lessons I learned was to not hold the knife out straight and press the blade lock. That blade swung down (gravity, what a concept)and tried to go into the handle. Unfortunatly my finger was in the way. All I could think was "Man, that was so stupid", the second thing that came to mind was to get the bleeding to stop. That new fangled serated blade didn't even slow down till it hit bone.

How many others have done something like this with your new toy?

Yes, my combo edge Renegade bit me like that the first time I handled her. It took a while, but things are OK between us now.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't consider a new knife officially mine until it has accidentally bitten me.

I avoided this seemingly endemic phenomema until the Grey Matriarch. Butt, its not the first time I've been bitten trying to gentle the fairer sex.

I have noticed that when I pull my Salsa from the right front pocket that the hood can catch and the knife comes out half open. Of course I haven't cut myself with it that way, I did that wiping off the blade last week.

My second Spyderco. A Ladybug. Tried to close it one-handed, and the annular finger got in the way...

Yeah, imagine if Isaac Newton discovered gravity with Concord_Bob's mishap instead of having an apple bonk him on the head.

I've had various knives in my collection 'bite' me be accident. Usually very tiny cuts that are so clean, I don't know I'm bleeding till I actually look at the wound. My CE FRN VG-10 Endura gave me a good nibble and left two little fang scars/marks from it's serrated teeth on my thumb.

It happened to me so often I don't even care much about accidetally cuts. It's true that very few were really deep.

Not w/a Spydie, but w/my Wenger Toolchest. Was closing it and caught my middle finger w/the tip. Gave me a nice V-shaped cut,but no blood on the blade. Only time I ever cut myself w/a Spydie was when I was cleaning some pocket lint out of a JD Smith I got off eBay. Had it open to 90deg so I could clean the locking mechanism, and actually bumped the edge w/my knuckle. The PE VG-10 made a nice clean slice that didn't even hurt.

OBTW,never kinetically open a Gunting on your leg. Figured if I was quick I could do it. Didn't get cut,but put a 1" slit in an almost new pair of Harley jeans.

pvr4: That's exactly the reason why I traded my Salsa away. It was a nice knife, but I could never warm up to that lock (I only trust lockbacks for folders).

Not that I *haven't* sliced myself with a few of my Spydie lockbacks...

My Native sunk into my palm for about 1/2 inch, slicing through some tendons. Major OUCH!

my first spydie bite was the pe frn/ats-55(98 model) delica... first trial of one hand closing(had opening down the first night) bit my pinky. bled nicely(first bite by a high quality very sharp knife)... I've done that same thing with many other knives since... best one was a BM Aries, nice scar still(about 2yrs later) and cleanup at my local.

I cut myself every week or so, most I don't even realize, and then I use the finger and feels like a papercut(and I don't do a lot of paper stuff).

Did the same with my SS PE Police, I don't know how but it just touched my finger. Never cut it, man I was lucky. Recently I dropped my Millie into my foot. That bled and hurt a bit. Take Care!
