Hm.
It's a toss up for me. I think I could live with my Ed Schemp Rock for its utilitarian style. But I really enjoy my GB with M4.
In a dream world, stranded island sort of world, the Shcemp Rock. For real life (which is true for the moment, baby girl on the way and no extra cash) the GB suits me fine.

Numerous others have already paved the way for noobs trying to find "just one knife" already. Search is your friend.

Sage4

For my reasons I think any of the Sage's would be ok but I've only used the Sage1 and 4.

1. Very comfortable ergonomics. This applies to many knives. This may be the most important thing. Who would use a knife with his/her favorite blade steel if the knife were uncomfortable to hold and use? I'm sure all the Sage's feel just about the same. Except for handle material.

2. Good blade steel. This applies to many knives. S30V on the Sages but other great steels out there also. This includes good edge retention and sharpening ease both.

3. It is legal about anywhere I will go on a regular basis. I live in FL and if I'm not mistaken there is a state wide 3" legal limit. If this is true that makes the GB technically illegal. Where I live the police doesn't really care what you carry (within reason) as long as you use it as a tool.

4. I like the back lock. The lock is not really important to me as long as it is reliable and the knife is easily unlocked and closed one-handed.

5. Hard use? I wouldn't call the Sage4 a hard use folder but it is definately a strong knife. I think it is stronger than the Sage1 because the titanium bolsters may strengthen the knife around the pivot area. I'm not 100% sure about this. If I needed a different knife because the task was something the Sage4 isn't capable of I'd get a fixed blade instead of immediately grabbing a Manix2 or Gayle Bradley which most people consider hard use folders. Keep in mind a hard use folder is not a hard use knife. There's a world of work needing a knife that a folder is not going to accomplish long term without damage. That's where a hard use knife (fixed blade) is needed.

I think these are the main things I value in a knife and of the knives I've used the Sage4 is the one I'd pick. Just glad I'm not faced with this question.

Very true but....

My answer will change over time. At one point it was a D'Allara, then a Phoenix etc. I'm sure that phenomenon is not unique to me (maybe it is? ;) )

And, I don't think the point is ever really to just have one knife, but rather to extoll the virtues of a favorite.

Yeah, these threads come up pretty regularly and they may be, to some extent superfluous, but if that's the worst thing we ever had to deal with..... ;)

Cheers,

Times change and with it so do opinions.

My opinion on this question hasn't really changed since the day I received my first Para 2. It's still "the one". But I'm thankful to be able to enjoy so many others too.

My current favorite model is the Manix 2 XL (the s90v version would be the one once it comes out) followed by the Southard and then PM2 (s90v version)

My Para2 s90v cf. Para2 is such a great user, and I love high end steels. Peelply carbon fiber is my all time favorite handle material.

I hate this kind of questions. Fortunately most of us live in the place, where we can have more than one of almost anything.
I would rather prefer the question:"What is your absolutely favorite knife?". I have my absolutely favorite, still carry three (we will not count Jester, right? :) ) and have no intention to reduce, unless I absolutely have to.

+1
Ken,
I am with you on this.
I never thought that this is going to happen. I EDC C83 Persian for more than six years and absolutely love it. It is still in my FRP every day, but for some reason my hand almost every time is picking-up Native5 from RRP

I love this yet :D
"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf"

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Lionspy for shear durability its going to have to last a long time and that knife is indistructable.you could sharpen that thick ellmax steel for a lifetime not losing much blade at all.so strong.

Of the knives I have now, I'd probably go with the M390 Para 2, with GB really close behind. Truth be told, I'd probably have to flip a quarter to choose between them. I hope to have a Military soon which may change my answer completely but for now it's Para 2. The Para 2 is lighter than the GB and a little more pocket friendly. The open back construction gives it the edge over my other favorite the N5 if I ever have to get into some mud and muck. If you could only have one blade then M390 is not a bad one to have.

I would vote Gayle Bradley, very tough, great blade shape and steel. The only negative is its a little heavy and non stainless. My second vote would be a Military, I would rather have a big blade and not be wanting.
