Favorite Steel?
So far nobody loves XHP, but that steel used to inspire a lot of discussion.
I'm going with S90V, because all things being equal I'd like my highly wear resistant knife not to corrode very easily.
I'd be more comfortable with my answer if the question had been "What is your favorite knife steel?" or even better "What steel would you like to have in your favorite Spyderco knife?"
I really like the Manix2 but I don't have one in S90V...

VG-10 is a truly elegant compromise of properties :D

VG-10 works great for me and is easy to sharpen either using or the SharpeMaker. I haven't really used the H1 Salt enough. I'd like to try some other steels and hope to get a Spyderco with super blue.

I voted for 154cm because I knew it would be behind VG-10, but they are tied for 1st place for me. I'm not a steel junkie, so I like a good strong all around steel for EDC use and both 154cm and VG-10 fit the bill on that.

Another vote here for attractively patterned Damascus (not the stuff they use on the Delica and Endura). Odin's Eye is great, but I also like Damasteel's Infinity, Hakkapelitta, and Rose; Feather (various makers - has to be matched to the right knife however); Devin Thomas' Raindrop or Vines & Roses; and there are tons of great looking Moki, Moki Ti, and Mosaics out there (such as Ed Schempp's 25th Anniversary Delica Spyder pattern). The Deacon wrote:Any attractively patterned powdered steel stainless damascus. Can't pick a single one, but Odin's Eye Damasteel would be a prime example. Sal may believe that "tractors don't have to look like Ferraris", but I don't see any reason why they shouldn't and these steels offer performance as good or better than many of the current "standards" and are orders of magnitude better looking than any plain steel.
In use, just about any of the current offerings work fine for me, whether it be VG-10, M390, S30V, or H1. They all have their unique traits that I favor in one situation or another.

m4 by a mile. I am able to sharpen it better than s30v, though that might be my limited skills showing. it just seems easier to "hone". It also seems to hold both its shaving edge and working edge several steps better than s30v. At the same time toughness seems to have increased dramatically. Both of these attributes could be based on the different edge grind properties of the different knives of course. haven't tested them both in similar enough knives.
and for a non stainless, it is still remarkably easy to maintain. you almost have to try to get this thing to stain.
I'm surprised at the votes, it's only a couple behind first place, yet there are less than a handful of models made with this steel. I hope we see more.
I think a nice fixed blade is in order with m4.

Yes, I think I'd love M4 in a small, thin fixie. :DGoodEyeSniper wrote:m4 by a mile.
