For me, neither. I just keep one in the console because it's handier while driving than trying to get into my pockets.

We were in a dual fatality wreck in 2002. Seatbelts still worked just fine. I suppose there are situations where they don't but there wasn't much left of our car and the belt releases still worked.

Exactly this! Black Assist, Leatherman Supertool and - well, actually two SAKs. One in my center console attached to a ResQMe, and one on my car keys.
I don't keep one in the car anymore. When you get in a wreck it probably won't be where you left it. I think it is better to keep one clipped to your pocket.
Almost 6 years ago, I got broadsided by an F150 that went through a red light. I had a knife in my center console, but unfortunately the console ended up in the middle of the road with the knife still in it while I was strapped in upside down.

Was everyone okay?
I can remember ours like it was yesterday..... I think I bent the door prying it open to get out. Went around to my wife's side. She's holding the deflated airbag in her hand saying "why didn't these things work?" I was like "Honey, they DID!"
But what you say is right. Nothing was where it was, and I'm not sure I've have had the presense of mind to look for anything anyway. Maybe if we'd been under water or something. Who knows?

It is still a clear memory. I am a little more patient of a driver these days and err on the side of caution more often than not.
Yes. Luckily everyone was alright. It would have been a different story if I didn't have my seat belt on. Luckily I only had some bruising from the seat belt and a small piece of glass stuck in the top of my head from the sun roof. I didn't even need stitches. The guy that hit me, was out of his truck and making sure I was alright immediately. He was strapped in as well.
On a side note, my seat belt still worked. I was in a stunned for a moment, but then I realized I wasn't seriously hurt and had to get out of the car. I un-clicked it and climbed out of the window and sat on the side of the road until the police came.
