How well do you guys think the new friction folder will be received?
I have one I purchased directly from Filip De Leeuw (Deviant Blades) a few years ago. I like it but it does not get much use. I just made a sheath so I am starting to carry it more.

Sweet version!! The all black is awesome! Congrats!

Unfortunatly I think it will not be very high on the priority list of many people. Only in countries where knifelaw are very strick this might sell well. That Spyderco added a sheet is a great idea, it makes the knife indeed more useable. Anyway I will get one, I know Filip and can't miss the first Belgian Spyderco :)

How comfortable is the knife to carry with that large tab sticking up in the air when it is closed? It doesn't look very elegant or refined, IMHO.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess...

Love the feel of the fat rounded scales and the looks, but I'll stick with locking blades.

When carried in a pouch on a belt it's not an issue, in your pocket depends on the size of your pocket :) But never stick it in your pocket without a sheat, you could have a nasty surprise...

Its not my favorite locktype aswell, but its legal where ever you go (except airplaines and NY :D ) i'm sometimes in the UK and then it comes in handy. I always heard the friction folder is the oldest type of folder. I find it awesome that Spyderco dares to produce knives that are very niche and do not guarantee a return on investment. They could easily just stick to popular models and not take the chance to explore new markets.

It is a nice throwback to friction folders, but I'm not a fan of the big tab. Of course, this wouldn't be the first time I poo-poo'd a model based on its looks only to find that I love it when it's in my hand (Caly, Techno, Dodo)

Interesting. I like the idea and simplicity of a friction folder, but they're not for me.

whats this?
will there be a spyderco friction model?

i absolutely LOVE friction folders, but it doesn't fit into my current "system" , well if the price is right i'll just have to find a place for it.

I don't carry it often, but I love this knife. With a sheath, I would definitely use it more.

The cut-out is there because the one-hand opening hole is recessed into the handle, and the cut-out is necessary to access it.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

With a friction folder, you use the palm of your hand or one of your fingers to block the tab in its groove = the blade is locked.
When a locking mechanism is going to fail, most of the time, nothing is alerting you before the blade closes on your hand/fingers.
When a friction folder is going to close, the tab will hurt your palm or fingers, you know that you are putting too much force somewhere or there is something going wrong (i.e.: blade stuck in wood), so you know that you have to grab the handle differently instead of continuing the same thing / movement that will end with an accident. Simple, safe.

If you trust your hands and touch sense (tactil feedback), your hand is probably the safest locking mechanism.

In my country (France), based on the lenght of the tab, a friction folder could be considered as a knife with a locking mechanism.

I want one but I am reluctant to get it. On top of the 180$ I would have to spend, I would end up spending some more for a leather sheath. It is an ideal length and sheeple friendly so I feel it would work well in my daily life.

I'm not sure if you're talking about the Deviant custom or the Spyderco but the Spyderco comes with a leather sheath with a pocket clip (on the sheath, not the knife).

I love friction folders because of their simplicity but I'm not really feeling the Mosiac pins and lack of a pocket clip (I'm picky) It looks like a fantastic design though.

I really love the look of this knife - especially the Spyderco version with mosaic pins, BUT I am not going to get it since it is such a niche knife. I dont carry knives on my belt and that tab sticking out looks like it will snag on stuff and Im sticking to locking blades. I have UKPKs and often forget they are not locking. Again, love the look. Love the nod to the friction folder design. Love the collaboration. Just not for me - not going to be a user - plus its expensive. If it were under $100, I would think about it (no, Im not saying it should be. I know they price based on costs, etc.).

That thing sticking out couldn't be more ridiculous, (in my opinion). Maybe cool back in the day, but not now.

Tell me how you really feel Jazz haha :D .

I think it's an interesting design but I don't have any plans to buy one.
