Lil Matriarch pics/thoughts?

#1

Post by Clip »

Any Lil Matriarch (or regular/sprint) owners out there care to give up some pictures and share their thoughts before I commence ordering one? I'd like to hear some opinions on this little gem as it'll be my first Spyderedge and first reverse S, if you don't count the Dodos.

Thanks!

I leave the pic's to someone with a decent camera, but I can give you some impressions.

+ Feels better in hand and carry better than the Tasman
+ The blade shape is really useful with serrations for the heavier tasks and PE tip taking care of delicate cutting
- Not an "office knife"

Mine has handled all edc tasks I thrown at it with ease, so this is definitely not only a SD knife. But perhaps not the best design for food prep, if you use folders for that. I plan to dress it up a bit with custom CF scales when funds allow. It deserves nicer clothes.

Now go and get one! =)

Cheers,
B

He'd never mentioned it, but our son in law picked one up a while back. So I got to handle it on Christmas. Very nice. Nicer than my preconceptions.

I didn't actually try it but it seemed like a very useful design.

I really like it, I've been using mine to cut quite a bit of cardboard. It can catch a little, but once you change your angle, I think it cuts better than a Para 2 because of the thinner blade profile.

I've been carrying mine tip down in my back pocket. The blade is bending far enough for the edge to hit and cut into the scale. I plan on just keep carrying and sharpening it until it removes enough of the scale to be clear.

This is one I have at the moment comparing it with the Delica as well as the Matriarch 2 and Endura. I would say it shouldn't just be considered a smaller SD knife as it is not as recurved as a Matriarch 2 or Civilian.

I have one and since I've been collecting Spydercos for close to 20 years, sometimes black FRN gets a little stale. So I swapped out the scales with a blue Delica. I like carrying it a lot more now. Sorry for the crappy photo.

It is interchangeable with a Delica 4, you just need to make sure to use the lock bar that comes with the Lil Matriarch. The blade locking notch is a little different than the Delica's.

Probably my next Spyderco. I love my Delicas, and I love the Matriarch blade shape - Win/Win for me.

Thanks guys! I do like how the blade isn't curved nearly as much as the Civilian, looks like it would be more useful as an EDC as opposed to SD like Sithus said.

Thanks for the pics! Gets me through til I can order one :)

It's a wicked looking knife, with a very high intimidation factor. :)

I like both sizes and will be looking to get both, but I am a hawkbill fanatic so this naturally is close. Also like that the tip is a bit less fragile than the Civi and hence better for non-SDC uses.

I love my Lil' Matriach. I carry it frequently and it works fine for every day activities. The serrations aren't as aggressive as the Tasman, for example, making it more suitable for EDC.

It would depend on what we do everyday, of course. It would not be very useful for cutting sashimi or origami, but should still be useful to open boxes, packages, etc. I believe someone had already pointed out its usefulness in marine related activities, or in climbing. As for self-defense, not sure how to use it, actually, except by wildly slashing. Watched James Keating's video, and was more confused after that.

There's a unique curve with using the Civilian for defense. It's ideal if you are either a completely untrained person swinging it like an axe, or you have trained quite a bit more than the average martial artist to have experience with this particular design. It's odd, but it's truly either a beginner's or an experts weapon.

Since I received mine I've always carried it in my back pocket. I rotate other knives but always carry the Lil Matriarch. Personally I do find the Delica sized handles a bit small but a fob fixed that problem. It's just a handy knife to have when a pe knife won't work as well.

This has been my secret Edc for quite some time. It is not a knife I normally pull out in public when people are looking, so no one realizes I own one, but last week, there was an incident where a large group of people came to me. I believe they wanted to see my knife. So I pulled it out with the ziptie mod and they randomly walked away. It is a great knife for use. USE IT LIKE MAD! Just keep in mine that it is somewhat intimidating. I recommend everyone own one. Especially for plastic and cardboard because those are **** on a normal edge.
