And no, I never did find a PE Gunting. It's like they are hiding from me...
Still have my trusty CE Gunting, but I just like the looks of a PE better...

Couldn't resist...
It was so easy to work on! Took apart fast and clean. The handle sides are so soft I just fileworked them with plain files. On the blade had to use diamonds, but it still took only about an hour and a half from start to finish. And then attached the scale...
Out of all the Spydies I've massacred, this one was by far the easiest to work with. Absolutely dreamy...

Vess> want to take a shot doing my beater 'fly? I'm wanting to do filework on the swedge, but lack the talent for that.
gun con·trol n. definition 1. The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker received that fatal bullet wound. 2. The ability to hit what you are aiming at. 3. The first key step of a corrupt political agenda where good citizens are disarmed so that a dictatorship may replace a democracy in the future.

Oh, my...
I don't really think I am confident enough to take someone else's Spydie and carve it up. What if I miss? What if the file slides? When I'm doing my own Spydie, I know if I screw up it's just me, and nobody ever need to know I can't follow a straight line...
But imagine this, you ship me a knife, and for some odd reason my diamond file slips and its sharp diamond tip rakes a 3" megascratch across the flat of the blade. There's no way it can be buffed out, could be more than 1 mm deep. Never happened before, but that's the only thing on my mind when I start fileworking...
VW > I have a PE ATS-55 Dragonfly coming my way. I'll try to filework that one (although not sure how, it has a small swedge) and then maybe we can swap if I'm successful. Like I said above, it's really risky to try and do this with someone else's cherished blade...

Very nice scales and the filework is awsome. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Vess> Aug 20th 03 will be 2yrs of use on my fly... don't think you want to trade for a "well used" one... can really see the difference in shape when held against a new one(I have a GS PE 'Fly in the box, I'll get a pic up tonight if it works).
Was thinking something like a very basic vine or even just spaced hollows making a wave along the spine. As to scratches, I've already polished the blade with sandpaper once, dremel last time(handle too)... pretty beat up in 2yrs of use, highly doubt you could put a big enough scratch on it that I can't polish out if it bothers me.

I guess I could do a rope filework or something. I have a "disembodied" Dragonfly (handle was destroyed in an unfortunate accident, but I still have the blade intact), so I might try to filework it in the next few days and see how it fares...

They're just your regular diamond files you can buy in just about any hardware store or even Radio Shack. They work pretty well, except you will need some practice. Unlike regular files that are more or less even, diamond files will have stones stiking out unevenly, which sometimes will force the file to slide or cut crooked. But after some practice you'll be able to do it just fine, as long as you concentrate on what you're doing at any given moment. The very second you relax and let it become "routine" your hand will slide and you'll do something utterly horrid... At least I do...
Oh, and for practice I got a 1m long metal bar about as thick as a blade. Cost only a few $C, and it's not tempered, perfect for practice.
And of course diamond files will have the stones chip off eventually, and they'll stop cutting. Once that happens, you'll need new ones. But if you go slow and don't press down on them too hard, they should last you about 40" of blades for certain. Although triangle files will wear down a LOT faster than round ones, simply because you'll be using certain parts of them more. So if you're buying them separately, get one round and a couple of triangle ones, and maybe one oval. That's enough for just about anything...
