Forced to guess I would think the redesign would include a FFG treatment. Otherwise they would just keep making the current model. Not sure though.

To me, FFG wouldn't really make much sense on a rescue model though. You wouldn't really need it for slashing through a seatbelt. Then again, maybe it's for people who EDC their rescue models as opposed to keeping them in the car?

EDIT: From the Blade HQ, it says that it's flat ground saber actually.

I agree. Just trying to guess what features would be on the next one replacing the current Rescue93. It's pretty evolved as is.

A new Stainless Rescue?

#5

Post by JD Spydo »

Even though I don't really want a Harpy with a stainless handle I do dearly miss the "STAINLESS RESCUE" model of the late 90s. I still believe that the STAINLESS RESCUE may have been the most ridgid model they ever made. That knife is so solid I believe you could drop it out of an airplane and it would still be functional.

The 2 originals I had ( C-14 & C-45) were great even with ATS-55 blade steel.>> so I've longed for a stainless Rescue with VG-10 or better. If they are going with a new model of Rescue then I would love to see the stainless handled model resurrected.

Next to that model I dearly loved the original Mariner model which is just another name for the Rescue IMO. I had that Mariner for many years.

I still have a C-45 model of the stainless Rescue SE and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

If I had to guess, I'd guess it will go the same way all the Delica and Endura went and feature nested steel liners and a three screw clip with four way mounting options. Don't see the blade changing much, unless they have it share the FRN Stretch handle, in which case it would have to be a tad shorter. No idea if they're going that route, but it would keep the tooling costs minimal, which makes sense to me.

As Paul "guessed", we went the way of the New Endura and Delica. Nested skeletonized liners, 4 way hourglass clip, screw consturction and slghtly different blade shape.

There was a picture of the new Rescue 3 posted on Spyderco's Facebook page a while ago.

It was for a "Which do you prefer: folders or fixed blades?" question.
My favorite Spyderco knives include: Caly 3.5, Chaparral, Delica 4 FFG, Stretch, Para-Military 2, Endura 4 FFG, Manix 2 & Manix 2 XL!

A plain edge would be really nice, too. ;)

PE Rescue: Hardly No Advantage I can see

#10

Post by JD Spydo »

They've had plain edge Mariners and Rescue models in the past. I've owned both of them and I'm sure some of the serious collectors have them now. The plain edged Mariner is somewhat of a rare bird but you can get one if you just keep your eyes open.

As much as this current crowd seems to highly prefer plain edges and seemingly abhor Spyderedges I'm quite sure they will offer it in PE. Be advised though that a Rescue type knife is truly at it's best with a Spyderedge. A Spyderedge will go through a seatbelt a bit faster than a plain edge >> with a possible exception of those who are super-skilled at sharpening. But that only makes up a small percentage of knife users.

Myself I would have little or no use for a plain edged Rescue model but I would want them to be available for those who prefer them.

I'm pretty sure that Jazz (and me) would want a PE option to regrind into a wharncliffe for EDC. I believe both of us lament the passing of the byrd rescue PE.

Add me to the list of those who'd like to see a PE version offered. Probably not going to happen though, unless possibly as a Sprint or sponsored Exclusive. While the overall interest in serrated blades has declined, sheepsfoot, hawkbill, and reverse S blades are the exceptions which is why Spyderco rarely offers PE as an option on regular production versions of those knives.

I don't think we would be opposed to a short run of plain edge Rescue 3 pcs. Maybe in ZDP? In BRG? Full flat grind? Not a sprint, but not big inventory.

I'd be happy with just a run of VG-10, black FRN to keep cost down. But I would also not be opposed to flat ground in a different steel either. Thanks for looking into the possibility. I know I'd be modifying the blade profile to a sharper tipped wharncliffe, but others may just leave it as is.

I'd also like to say that I'm also looking forward to the "normal" serrated version. They make wonderful knives to give away for people to stow in their 72-hour kits.

Sal, any of that sounds awesome! Vg10 is great, too. I might need 2 - 1 to mod and 1 to keep stock. I like sheepsfoot blades, too. :)

Can't stop thinking about it. A flat ground plain edge version would be sweet.
