Szabo Impressions ?
Hi everyone , anybody have the new szabo ? I would like to hear impressions of this knife . Regards MG2
I just got the Szabo yesterday, and I'm very impressed with it. The most striking thing at first was the size and heft. Even still inside the Spyderco box, the weight was very evident, and the box bulged as it tried to contain this massive knife.
The fit and finish on mine is typical Taichung excellence. The gold line CF is interesting and different to look at, but has a similar texture to the usual Taichung CF. The blade is large, and beautifully contoured with a useful shape and purposeful tip. The spring, self-close mechanism is visible in the liner, and seems to work well (though I wonder if lint and debris could eventually get in there and affect function?). My example opens smoothly and lock up is rock solid. My overall impressions are that this is a solid, well made, beast of a folding knife. It's too big for me to legally carry, and would definitely not make a good impression on NKP. I probably won't have the opportunity to use this knife much, but it's a very impressive knife, and I'm glad to have it in the collection.

About the same size as the Catcherman!

I had the Szabo for the first time in my hands on the Amsterdam meet and it was love at first sight! It's an awesome knife. Nice positive lock, the sell close is very cool.
I like the heavy blade and oversized handle. When you hold it near the end and swing it it like a small sword, you feel the wait af the knife working to give a nasty cut. But its not your everyday EDC knife, on the otherhand now that I think about it, it could be Satan's EDC. Seriously most people run away when seeing it. But just like the Civilian its a sweet knife for the collection and you certainly get the conversation going when you show it to your friends. The only thing is I dislike is the golden line CF, its to much bling but what the heck its a wicked knife!!

I really like the Szabo. The size is nice. The heft is nice. The looks are awesome. I like how the gold CF looks, but in my opinion it photographs better than it looks in person. I think it has to do with the camera's flash causing the gold to shine more in pictures. I was able to EDC it for a few days. What removed it from my pocket was the slipperiness of the grip. In one occasion my hands were only slippery with light perspiration and the knife slipped in my hands. I almost dropped the knife and trying to prevent me dropping it i almost cut myself! Someone on another forum mentioned that i should have the scales bead blasted to add more grip. I might give this a shot. Aside from the grip issue the knife is tops.

This is my new edc been carrying it for a week now. It's not the best face shaver the edge is kinda thick. Feels great in the hand though especially if you have larger hands. I've always wanted a knife the size of the Millie with a comp lock. This is kinda my dream knife. The self close makes it harder to flick open but it's possible. One handed closing is easier a problem I have with most comp locks is I close them too hard and they bounce back open. The self close spring stops this issue. Personally I find it to be a great edc a good point and a nice belly not to mention a slight bit of recurve which I find useful for rope. The blade angle makes it easy to cut objects on a flat surface. People definitely are apprehensive about the size especially with such a small pocket clip they don't expect such a large knife on the other end. It's pretty thick too but I like it. Everyone has their own opinion but I already have 2 of these and plan to buy another 2 for backups

My only gripe is that once again, there could have been more edge. Not that it is needed on this knife, but that big blank section drives me nuts. It's there...so use it. Grind the edge back further and get all the edge you can out of it. Otherwise it is just a bunch of wasted space IMO.

You guys that own the knife, can you confirm that the scales are 100% carbon fiber or are they 50% G10? I heard a guy on youtube say that they are G10 with a carbon fiber overlay like the Sage 1.

I can't really confirm anything, but the "gold line CF" does seem to be on the top layer only. I can't tell what the other material is by looking at it.thelock wrote:You guys that own the knife, can you confirm that the scales are 100% carbon fiber or are they 50% G10? Just got mine last week!! I really like it. I have small hands so it is definitely "sword like" for me. Very beautiful knife!

I know just what you are saying. It really seems like a regular ball detent would have been just fine on this blade. It doesnt seem like it needed this self close mechanism at all.KBar666 wrote:The self close feature I don't get though. For "fighting" knie which is what the one was made for, it sure seems slow to open.
Is the spring meant to be that strong?

Hi all its been a while and this knife has brought me back. i love it.
could we please get the same blade shape in the same blade material or vg10 maybe a lttle thinner to reduce the wietht, maybe with skelitize liners to reduce the weight, and myabe with a liner lock to reduce the wieght? I love the knife but its a little pricey and just to heavey to edc for me.
just some thoughts.
nice knife though.

Vg10 cant be done unless its made in Japan, and changing it to a linerlock would make barely 1 gram of differencesixheads wrote:Hi all its been a while and this knife has brought me back. i love it.
