OT,Fixed blade

#1

Post by J Smith »

I been feeling the need for a good fixed blade.Spyderco does not have what I want in one.If the Lun was spear point it would be perfect.I want one with a full tang and linen or canvus micarta.4 1/2 to 7 in blade.I have been looking at Busse but there is no way I would pay that much for one no more than I would use it.I am really leaning toward the Ontario TEK or RAT7.Does anyone have one of these? Will they stand up to very heavy use?

Is Spyderco thinking of doing a production peice made like these?

J. Smith: I been feeling the need for a good fixed blade>>>

Camillus is offering two models (I believe they're called the Black Ops Knives), I believe the blade lengths are around 4 inches on the smaller model and 5 1/2 inches on the larger one.

Handle material is canvas-micarta. These knives looked awesome, and the knife center has them for under $70, which is a great deal.

I have the large Cuda CQB and it has been my camp knife for 2 years now. Great blade and strong. Full tang, canvas micarta handles, not much of a guard but you really don't feel like your hand is going to ride up on this blade.
Just bought a Perrin to replace it because as much as I like it, the Perrin just called to me, I love it. I still have it but have put it away till another day.

From all the fixed blades I've seen, I got dibs on Laci Szabo's UUK. But it's expensive like ****

I was also going to mention the Camillus Cuda CQB-1...That one is my FAVORITE fixed-blade knife!
Buy one, and if you don't like it, I'll trade you something for it!

There is also the Gerber Yari to take a look at, as it is also an excellent knife.

I got to handle the TAK at the Blade Show, and if they make it long enough, I will probably get one! Jeff Randall knows how to design a great fixed blade! With the canvas macarta handle, and flat grind 1095 4 1/2" DP blade, I'd say yes indeed it will stand up to hard use! RKBA!

If you can deal with an alternative handle material I strongly recommend the various Becker (BK&T) models from Camillus. The BK10 Crewman (5-1/2" blade), BK7 Combat/Utility (7" blade), and BK9 Combat Bowie (9" blade) are among the best bargains available in working fixed blades.

Jeff, give a look at the B/M Nimravus in M-2 steel, linen Micarta scales can also be removed for cleaning or for lashing to a spear or if you just want a lighter knife.
Also the previously mentioned Mora 2000 hunter model is perfect for us working guys budget. Ron

For some REALLY nice fixed-blade knives, check out Newt Livesay's website. They're not very expensive, and the quality looks outstanding, with many military-type models available.

Two suggestions: You might want to look into T.O.P.S. - have no personal experience but I've heard great things about them and they're not THAT expensive... everything is relative of course...

The other is that if you like Busses, check out Swamp Rat Knife Works. It's run by Jennifer Busse as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Busse Combat, and they manufacture in the Busse plant during off-production hours. Their "Camp Tramp" sounds like it might be close to what you're looking for except that they have Respirene handles instead of Micarta. (Respirene is what the Busse Basic models used)
