Do you watch Youtube videos when thinking about buying a new knife

If your topic has nothing to do with Spyderco, you can post it here.

Thanks Ken, I thought it was a stroke of narcissism.

I'd go into that shop and level with them and tell them how much i'd pay and show them i can still get it cheaper online, and if they'd work with me on the price i'd buy from them but that's over $100 over what i can get them at online. I usually don't even get charged tax at my local shop, he tells me a flat dollar amount and i buy or pass. He's never given me a price that i felt was unreasonable, and if it isn't the same as the going price online then it's never more than like $10 more. I can handle that for the person to person interaction and handling before buying, i just wish he kept more in stock. He'll order anything i want but ordering usually means buying.
I know, they are actually sitting on quite a bit of stock and what's happening (as is the case with many other retail stores) is that people are using them as a research tool - and like it or not they are going to need to change the way they do business if they want to move product. I would really prefer to buy local and support or local economy and I could feel bad for them but thing is they are so far off the mark that even I could go out and buy the product and re-sell it for 20 percent less than them and still make money, that's a little absurd.

Handling the knives and just seeing them in makes such a differeance, I was pretty excited about ZT until I actually saw one and they are great but there is know way I could carry one.

I was in the same boat about the ZT. I ended up selling a Para 2 to a guy who happened to be carrying one and let me play with it..it's just not for me. I couldn't live with ordering knives like that and constantly being let down, because as much as i love Spyderco there have been a few like that, where if i hadn't handled them first i'd have been really let down and had to return them. On the other hand, there are knives i would have never bought if i didn't happen upon them at the shop and fall in love with them after handling them (Para 1, Vallotton).

Yeah it's different that's for sure. I for instance have ordered and cancelled the Vallotton a few times now just because I haven't been able to handle it. I decide I want it but then I look at the weight and the size and the price and I just don't want to take the chance.

On the other side I ordered a small Sibenza and when it arrived I was pretty sure I should have ordered a large however, having never seen a large ... who the **** knows and I can't be asking suppliers to send knives back and forth to me so I can make up my mind.

When I first start to consider a new kniife to purchase one of the first things I do is to watch every video on that particular knife to see what other people have to say about it. I think you can learn quite a bit about a knife from these videos like the sound of it, how the blade is positioned in the handle if the tip is way down in the handles like it should be etc. I will also catch myself watching the Youtube videos even after I have ordered it to keep me satisfied until it comes in.
I think youtube videos AND THIS FORUM are responsible for a lot of knife purchases for me. I see the excitement in others when they get a given model and watching the videos is like a golfer watching a match on TV and other sports. After the viewing is over you want to play. Hence, purchase. :) I'm not complaining at all. The computer is my only access to knife people. I bet there are others with the hobby here but I don't know them.

And yes, videos are a great way to get info on a knife I'm considering. If nothing else you get to see the knife in a human hand. There are other companies that provide several pictures of their knives open, closed, in pocket, in hand, etc. I wish Spyderco would do that but since the pictures are available in "moving picture" mode it's probably not worth them adding it to the catalogs. When they save money, we save money. I believe that. :) Or is it, when they save money, they go on vacation? :D

I tend to consult these reviews once I have already brought to either see if my take on aspects is shared by others but have never brought based on a review.
I find a bandwagon mentality to these reviews and some more well known people tend to plug blades due to sponsorship so I cannot consider this as its biased towards self gain.
I think nut-n-fancy epitomises this and find him to be very condescending and narrow minded when taking criticism one I do rate is virtuavoice , he is very knowledgable and unassuming .

I much prefer forum reviews. The content is on average better and the format is easier for me personally. Reviews like Mr Blonde and other folks provide are almost as good as holding the knife.
Exactly the same thing I do.

I watch them for this reason mostly. I can seem more detail from some vids.

If all photos of knives were as good as Wouter's, I wouldn't have to watch youtube vids at all!
