How many people here use the zip tie "opener"?

Just had a go- seems fast to me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8OBCgz0ypI&feature=plcp
I live by actual laws, like physics, not murphys :) Like I said I always have a blade, a zip tied delica is still better than nothing.chuck_roxas45 wrote:There's this guy Murphy... and his law...
Tangents aside, the actual point was that if carrying a dedicated SD knife, you cant beat a wave.

Lol not at all, I know where your coming from. I realise my statement was a bit contradictory but I think you know what I'm getting at also, while maybe ideal, its not always practical to go about daily life armed to the hilt. If I could legaly carry a p'kal at all times I would, but I have to weigh up the low risk of being attacked with the high risk of loosing a knife. <3chuck_roxas45 wrote:I found somebody here... what do I need to go to prac tac for? :D

I love using the wave. Don't see any cons to it really. If I want to pull it out slowly, I slide the knife forward as I draw. Anyways, I use a kydex wave on my endura. Much more reliable than the zipties, since it digs into your pocket more, and I haven't really noticed any damages to my pockets. Here's mine:

Carry a sharp knife, and life will never be dull
It has some usefulness and works well. However I also dislike the look, and a constant concern of moisture trapped there causing rust. For food prep, it's bad as the gunk getting trapped there can be a hygiene issue.Evil D wrote:I also found the zip tie to be more consistent especially if you have loose pockets. The Emerson hook works best in jeans, but the zip tie being wider than the blade gives it more to snag on coming out. I even took a shot at making a semi-permanent metal hook, which was really ugly but worked fantastic. I eventually took it off for fear of water getting under it and corroding my blade.
Having said that, I do have it installed from time to time, depending on carry mode and mood. It's cheap enough to be discarded when situation & mood change.
One last thing: for knife that's too awkward to be manually opened (CS XL Voyager), it'll be very useful.
The wave IMHO is more about reliable than speed. Speed is idealistic, reliable is what works under duress. It's why autos and fixed blades really are better and why waved knives can trump normal folders.
Really though the topic of defense often gets a bit silly. People generally are tool users/theorizers instead of practitioners. Purchase A + Logic B = safety. I really wonder how many people who carry guns practice retention techniques. Similar the knife folks who assume it's draw and win.
The fastest deployment is a right cross.

Ka-bar TDI works for me but I do have to do drills. I find that a fixed blade is more reliable than a wave, especially for weak hand deployments. Just carrying it doesn't do s**t though. :DBlerv wrote:The wave IMHO is more about reliable than speed. Speed is idealistic, reliable is what works under duress. Exactly :) . I mean, having a knife is better than not if things get really bad. Having a clue what you are doing is better though. Most folks don't even know you are supposed to tuck your chin.chuck_roxas45 wrote:Ka-bar TDI works for me but I do have to do drills. Just carrying it doesn't do s**t. :D

Hehehe, yeh. Throat is a good target for knives and jawbone is a good target for a right cross.

I've tried the zip-tie before just for the sake of trying it and then later took it off. Also, I think I remember reading that they went from calling it an "Emerson Wave" to calling it an "Emerson Opener" for legal reasons.
