Spyderco Techno – Final Thoughts
Spyderco has another winner on their hands here. From a fit and finish perspective this knife is immaculate. If you have owned any of Spyderco’s other Taiwanese knives you will begin to understand where I am coming from, but even for their Taiwanese factory this knife is impressive. No doubt fans of Spyderco and titanium framelocks will find a lot to like with this little knife. It’s just really well done.

Now that I am done gushing over the knife I do have some caveats for you. First of all, it is expensive and small. I don’t necessarily have a problem with either of those things, but I’m not going to say this knife is for everyone either. From a cutting perspective the geometry is a little chunky. Spyderco did thin the blade out, but the relatively narrow profile and thick stock has its limitations. Also, the ergonomics are good, but not outstanding. So the Techno is far from a perfect knife – at least on paper. However, if you are willing to overlook that sort of thing, and approach the knife from a wider perspective, then I think you will be very pleased with the Techno. It’s one of the most solid folding knives I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing, and the feeling of quality I get from this knife is difficult to describe.

I also have to “keep it real” for my fellow lefties. This really isn’t a knife designed for us. I’ve managed to overcome the opening adversity, but unless you really like the design I don’t think it is worth the struggle.

All in all I’m really impressed with the Techno. If you like smaller knives and have the money, check it out. It’s a very cool little knife.

I agree, the level of quality is something that can only be appreciated once it's in hand. I like the Techno much more than I ever expected. It has quickly become one of my favorite knives to carry (and I usually prefer larger, thinner blades).

There are some big cosmetic things that I seriously detest about the Techno, but the design itself is spectacular. As a lefty, I am wondering if it might be possible to have some of the lock bar removed to make the hole just a bit more accessible without compromising it's strength...I just need to be able to get the edge of my thumb into the hole.

I handled on at the SFO and it was definitely a very well built knife with great fit and finish. Unfortunately, the ergonomics were a bit off for me. I think my hand is a bit too big. Nonetheless, I can see why it is so popular. I may end up buying one in the end but my initial impression was that it was a bit off for me.

+10 on quality build. Im a fussy dick about finish, the techno is impecable. The wire clip however looks cheap and interferes with a comfortable grip. Worm in the apple. *shakes head*

I don't know what you lefties are complaining about just become a righty and enjoy this little beast. Imo the ff is probably the best I've seen on any of my ti spydies. (the tuff ff is also outstanding). Highly recommend this one.

You are so right about the clip...and it is cheap feeling as well as looking. It is easily moved all over the place. No matter how tight I crank down the screw, it still moves all over. Plus it is just ugly.

Is it different from other wire clips? (UKPK, Caly etc) I know we discussed yours not seating right, but just the lip itself.... I vastly prefer the wire clips I have.

I absolutely love mine, I cannot really say much that has not been stated before. I don't know a lot about steel, but I am very impressed with how sharp this knife gets and how long it stays sharp.

I am a leftie but simply use my right hand if I want to flick the blade open, then swap hands to cut things. I can usually afford the additional half second it takes to change hands. Its also very easy to open one handed using my left hand, it just doesn't look as cool as flicking the blade out.

The blue G-10 back spacer, I think it looks great. Its an interesting contrast to the titanium and something a bit out of the ordinary. Very cool, and I hope someone will start making custom back spacers in a variety of colours and materials. I'd be all over a GITD or a natural G10 piece, I think that would look very cool.

While I think the wire clip on Spydercos is good, I tend to not use them for urban carry. You are not allowed to carry a knife in public here in Japan, so I always take my clips off and throw the knife into my pocket. I think pocket knives look better without clips anyway.

To be honest, if I have to nit-pick and find a fault with this knife then all I can say is that the name is a bit silly. I am sure there is a reason for it, but Techno.........?? Like I said, there is not much wrong with this knife!! I love it.

No point me posting photos as everyone has seen the knife countless times, but I did recently post some (low quality iPhone) photos in another thread showing the size comparison between the Techno and the Dragonfly that some people may find useful.

Interesting point Scarlett! Trust me a lot of lefties will like this one too... myself included. :)

Re: the pocket clip - I love the wire clip on my Dragonfly, Sage 1, Sage 2, and Caly 3.5 so I was pleased to see it included here. One of my favorite clip designs - especially for office carry. No issues with the clip moving around and I don't mind the blasted finish. It's more discrete than a polished finish and should wear well. Just my opinion of course.

Other than the finish of the clip it is the same. On some knives I think that the wire clip is totally ok, but on this one...I think that it looks totally out of place and it just isn't very secure. I went by my local today to see if it was just this one, nope. I tried 15! And they were all pretty easily rubbed back and forth.

I wasn't sure the Techno would be a keeper until I carried it for a few days. I much prefer the tumbled finish to the Sage 2 finish. Lock up is solid and once it had been through the Edge Pro, the edge is holding up well (I got one with bevels that my Sharpmaker wasn't sorting out easily). Whilst only a three finger grip (even in my small hands) it can do some fairly heavy work. Blade stock may be a little thick for food prep but I'll find a lot of other things to cut with this guy to justify carrying it!

I'm still in two minds about the clip. Initially it was going to come off but I found it a bit heavy to be in flopping around at the bottom of a pocket. Whilst mine is seated tight, it doesn't sit level on the scale. It does carry in-pocket really nice and deep though so for the moment it will stay on.

There have been the comparisons to various knives; I've just added a few photos of it against a PT - its "competitor" in my rotation.

It is an expensive knife for its size but well worth considering. I suspect mine has earned a permanent spot in my rotation … but then I like titanium and I like RILs / framelocks / mono locks which account for almost half of my rotation.

Thanks for a great thorough review. I love this knife and I've been carrying it a lot. There's something about it. I pick it up and I don't want to put it down.

I think this is the first time I've heard anyone speak of using it to CUT something.
The knife looks great and I do think the F & F are great. I haven't gotten one yet because of the small and thick blade?? Maby later??
Beautiful knife though!

I'd love to have a Techno, sadly I can't afford it right now :o It looks perfect for me, small, tough, and stout :)

I am a big believer in using my tools, I don't need a knife that sits in a drawer. So last weekend I had an over night camping/climbing trip and decided it would be a great chance to put the Techno through its paces.

I know its not an "outdoor" knife, but it is still a knife. Used it for clearing vines from around climbing anchor points, slicing wood for tinder for the camp fire, cutting para-cord used to set up tarps etc, basic food prep and any other general camp duty.

It performed really well in every duty, especially the tinder shaving. Its not ideal of course for food prep - cutting up sausages, slicing vegetables etc due to the thick but short blade but it got the job done.

It is still quite sharp but will benefit from a few strokes on the fine Sharpmaker stones (when I get mine back from a friend!)

One thing though, I really like knives that have that naturally worn look that you can only achieve by giving the thing tons of pocket time and real use...........I don't really see how the Techno will show that, with the stone wash titanium and blade I think it will still look like this after 10 years of solid use!!

I do love my Techno, but wont be taking it camping anymore as I have other blades more suited to the task.

I've been carrying mine for the past few weeks now, and I'm absolutley sold on this knife. I haven't been this excited about a knife since getting my first Small Regular Sebenza nearly seven years ago. I've owned multiple CRKs, Striders, Hinderers, and full-on customs, but this knife is the only one that has had me put my Sm. Reg.Sebenza in the drawer and not think about putting it back in my pocket. Yes, I'd prefer it be larger, but it's so stout and well made, there's really nothing else about the knife I have issue with.
From the cutting I've done to this point, I can say the size hasn't been an issue. If anything, I appreciated the amount of control I had.
I friggin love it!
