ZDP Ladybug rust observation

This knife lives on my keys, which doesn't get dropped in water or anything like that, but i do clip it to my belt loop and tuck it into my back pocket so it might see some sweat. Some of it did simply wipe off, but some i think is deeper than surface rust, especially inside the hole. It could also be that the rust is just down into the surface texture of the hole and wouldn't easily wipe out.

My ZDP Ladybug has similar rust. It was caused by one 3 hour trail run in the waist belt pocket of my pack. Rust specks on the blade. Some wiped off, others are still there.

I guess that is one of the compromises caused by the ZDP formula - it isn't as rust resistant as other alloys. Personally, it is a tradeoff that I don't mind making!

I've experienced similar spotting with my DragonFly ZDP blade, Evil - after keeping it in my front pocket at Scout camp where I was sweating through my clothes in the summer heat. Since then I give my ZDP blades a little wipe down with TufGlide every so often. But to be honest, I don't always remember the inside of the Spydiehole! :rolleyes:

Both of my ZDP knives have a discoloration in the hole in the same pattern as your rust. I always figured it was because it was laminated with 420J2, but now I wonder if in manufacturing the metal shears unevenly (if it's punched, I thought it might be EDM) leaving an area more prone to oxidation.

This is a picture of ZDP-189 on a Mule team knife used by my wife in the kitchen. I have no idea what she used it on or left it in to do that, but it is one of the reasons that I don't like ZDP-189 for everyday use.

Anyway, I always wished I could get a ZDP-189 mule when they were available, but if I did I wouldn't use it for the kitchen or everyday use either for different steels have different applications.


By the way what's the wife's kitchen board made out of anyways? Kevlar? :D

Just the nature of ZDP-189's high carbon content I guess... there's no such thing as a free lunch.

I'm already planning on a SB Ladybug. It'll get a nice patina and hopefully that'll be enough. I've petitioned for high end steel options in the Ladybug for years so this is at least another option.

I've noticed a few specks on the blade of my ZDP-189 Delica. I'm sure with some work it would come off but who knows.

That type of rust inside the opening hole doesn't happen regularly on my EDC knives, but I've seen it a few times before. Both on S30V and VG-10 spydies, as well as ZDP189. It's a natural spot on the blade for moisture and dirt to collect. In all cases it was easily wiped away with a mild polish like copperpolish. I don't like patinas much, so I pre-polish my ZDP-blades with just a little polishing paste. It adds to a shinier finish that repels water better.

Mine got some rust on a hunting trip late last year. I stumbled upon some orange trees in the forest and cut one open. I didn't clean it well and the next day there were rust spots. They luckily wiped away with a little elbow grease.

I would tend to agree with Solidstate on this Somehow I feel Solidstate has a good scientific basis for his opinion Heck, I might just look up the active chemstry of Noxon, just for giggles :)
