My Strider SMF does that. But, there's no play.

I would take the knife apart and bend the lock bar inward. That's probably the only thing Spyderco would do to help it out. Over time with use it will eventually acclimate itself.

I know you saidntherenis no contamination, but did you try cleaning with alcohol or brake cleaner?
I have too many expensive hobbies to even consider another one.

Hi, yeah have tried cleaning it, with alcohol.
I sent the link to the video to Charlynn at Spyderco warranty, she said a small amount of movement is normal but mine looks to be a little
more than normal, of course she can't determine if its a warranty issue without seeing it though, which is understandable.
It's about a three week turn around at the moment so with shipping from where I am thats about 7 weeks before I get the knife
back.... AARGH.
Do I just live with it? what if it gets worse? .......
I love the knife.

Did you try what I suggested?
Then wait about 3-6 months for the lock face to break in.
Looks perfectly normal to me.

Why can't you simply get a replacement from the vendor? That's what I would do.

Is it really that simple? I send in this knife and they send me a new one?

Depending on the vendor's return policy, it might be.

If it's only a week old and is otherwise still in new condition, the retailer should exchange or refund your purchase. It should be within that period on a new piece of merchandise where the retailer handles returns/exchanges.

I looked at the policy for returning items where I bought it from...

"Defective items will need to be sent back to the manufacturer for service. ******* Knives, will not act on either parties behalf, but will answer any and all questions honestly and accurately as possible."

I suppose I'll send it in to Spyderco, at the end of the day it does what its meant to but its just a niggle, I just really like having it in my pocket.
If I get it sorted and have a good solid lock up the enjoyment factor would be sweeter.
Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated.

Ok I checked my techno after seeing your video, I actually do have a bit of that up down movement as well but not as pronounced as yours.

You can try adjusting the pivot screws, if it's too loose, tightening it may help a bit.

I stripped my techno down cleaned, relubed and reassembled it - I still have some of that movemt same as original, before take down.

It's a little annoying as this is the only frame lock (2 sebenza's and a ZT 551) I have that seems to have this up down movement, however for me it's not really a deal breaker. It's still a good knife and I'm prepared to accept a reasonable amount of movement, eventually this movement may even disappear as the lock faces wear in and conform better to each other.

On mine I'm not too concerned about any safety issues, it will not disengage in normal usage, it's only when pressure is applied to the blade spine when this lock face slippage occurs - most normal usage would not result in sufficient pressure to cause lock failure so that would meet manufacturers "acceptable" levels of movement.

I'm from Oz myself so sending stuff back is something I've never had to and would loath to do because of time frames and vague customs laws, I might not be able to get it back!

I suggest adjusting the pivot tension 1st, no 8 torx head, then evaluate if it's too excessive or is going to be unsafe. Hope that helps!

Bad luck spyderbro, got my techno today and its solid as a rock, I can't budge the blade in any direction when applying significant force, it feels like a fixed blade.
The first couple of times I gave it a flick, the lock bar bound to the tang, but that smoothed out within about 5 operations of the lock, the knife came well oiled too, what you are experiencing does not seem to be the norm, I know that feel with shipping :(

Bummer, that's a crappy policy from a retailer, but I understand your options may be limited due to shipping issues. I watched the video, and don't blame you for wanting to exchange the knife. I would not be satisfied with that amount of slippage either, it looks excessive to me.

Good luck, I'm sure the factory will sort it out for you, they have always taken care of problems I have had.

The knife came with the pivot at the perfect tension, I tightened it just a touch to try and eliminate the slop but no luck.
@ w3tnz, mine was exactly the same, lock bar stuck to the tang but within about 5 flicks the stickiness was gone.(always good to see a fellow Kiwi here too :) )
Lol... my wife says send it to Spyderco so she can have a rest from the constant flicking. :p
