Good point Paul,

Didn't think about the machining/ milling out of the recessed clip. That would certainly be an offset to the additional sprint costs of the scale materials if that is indeed how it is constructed.

Here is the link to the Ancient Green Kauri I was mentioning: http://www.thewoodturnersstudio.co.nz/p ... Blanks.htm
Look closer to the bottom of the page for only some examples of this magnificent wood.
(edit: Ancient Kauri link - http://www.thewoodturnersstudio.co.nz/p ... tKauri.htm )

Also on the same page is Totara Burl which is an absolutely gorgeously figured wood. More highly figured than the Green Kauri, but I like the Green Kauri for its depth of structure and it almost glows like MOP.

A clipless Kopa with either of these woods would be a boon to any collector (or user)

Both of the Kauri and Totara are exquisite, Daniel. I'd jump at the chance for a Kopa in either, and clipless would certainly be a bonus. However, I suspect the Kopa's maker has never worked with either of them. Given Sal's comment that "The maker that made the Kopa's doesn't have the confidece to work with all of the exotic materials so we're trying to find something nice that they can work with." I suspect that, like a number of other attractive woods and a bunch of other attractive materials I can think of, the necessary confidence level may not be there.
