PE/SE or Combo Edge

I had been carrying a Standard SE until I got my Delica PE. The Standard seemed to have stayed sharp longer and I miss it for whacking greenbriers and other nasty vegetation while in the woods. I like the Delica for finer work. Just wonder how many of you carry a Combo Edge knife instead of both a PE and an SE. I think that I need something with teeth.

I carry 2 folders; A stainless fully serrated Police model, and a stainless plain-edge Delica...That way, I have all bases covered.

Hey Fred,
I solely prefer the PE over all the other Edges. The only time I wished I had the SE or ComboEdge is when I was splicing mooring lines in the Navy. Now, that I don't have to do that anymore, PE is for me.

I enjoy the combo-edge; the best of both worlds. My Spyderco is a Native, so most of the blade is serrated, with a section of the tip being PE. I'm well pleased with this.

My other carry knife, an Emerson CQC-7, is 50/50 plain/serrated.

I carry a combo edge FRN Endura with me. It's large enough a knife to have a good amount of plain edge and serrated edge on the blade.

I use the plain edge part of the blade to slice through plastic shrink wrap, loose ends on paper rolls, and plastic tape. The serrated edge has duties with cardboard, thick plastic straps & wraps, and the occasional bubble wrap packaging.

I chose to carry one combo edged knife over two different edged knives for economical reasons. The FRN Endura is a big blade, no doubt, so it is up to lots of different cutting chores. It's light and easy to carry. And with the combo edge and it's big blade, it gives me all the cutting power I need. It's also affordable, a workhorse, and very reliable.

Got to agree with Silver Dragon on this one. I also carry a Comboedge FRN Endura. I've never found a chore that this knife could not tackle.

I must admit that most of the Spydercos that I collect (not for carry) are PE. I just think they look better, and are often a little harder to find. But when I hike or fish, I feel I need an "all-in-one" knife, hence the CE Endura. I carried one for 8 years, and finally replaced it this year with a VG10 model, same blade configuration. The CE Endura just seems like a perfect knife for me. The balance (in my hand) is nearly perfect, and it takes a lot of abuse.

I always like to have a full serrated blade on me, just in case. Lately it's been a C44 Dyad, IWB. It's not my main knife and I haven't used it for a thing, I just carry it. Having that serrated edge is comforting.

I personally don't like the Combo-edge. To me, it has to be one or the other.

As for me, I decided that my next knife would be PE. 50/50 on Endura -- neither part is long enough.

I have a PE Vesuvius for plain edge chores. I prefer plain edge, but always found SE to be what I need the most. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Maybe Sal should consider redesigning a new Dyad knife. Instead of the serrated sheepsfoot and plain upswept point blades, he can stick on something sharped more like the Endura or Delica blades <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I carry combo edge knives. You get the best of both in just one knife. The serrations do help when cutting something hard regardless of what people may say. I just used a combo edge knife to cut 2 fan belts and believe me the serrations did make a difference. I hope this helps.

I've never been one for combo edged knives, however, I've found the best of both on the Military CE. The 4" blade, with about 2.5" PlainEdged and the other 1.5" <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Edged, fits my needs just fine. For times when I carry only one <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>, this is it. Though that rarely happens...<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I make it a habit to carry at least one knife with SE on it for tougher cutting chores at work, along with my Buck 110(as a loaner).

It depends on what I'm doing at the moment. I have a Delica PE that I take with me hunting. It's great for field dressing and skinning, but for most other chores I like either a SE or a combo.

Speaking of combo edged knives, I have noticed that I tend to sharpen mostly the plain edge (and use mostly the plain edge too). I think that CE is great for hiking / backpacking, but for EDC I'd rather go for a PE. That's the theory, <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> practically I carry my trusty Delica in SE. It does a great job <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I don't currently own a CE knife. I like the concept, but as some folks have mentioned, it has to have enough serrated edge to be useful. IMHO, the serrated edge also needs to be on the straight part of the blade to be most efficient. I don't care for serrations on the curved part of a blade. Also, when cutting with serrations, I tend to saw back and forth more, so I prefer a sheepsfoot blade to avoid puncturing surrounding material.

My favorite SE Spydies are the Rescue Jr and the Ladybug II. They are excellent supplements for the PE blades on my multitools and SAKs. For general use folders, I prefer the PE Spydies.

Combo edges suck. The serrations are never where you need them. Either all serrated or all plain edged is the way to go. The only thing the serrations aren't real good for is skinning. On top of that, the Police is the worst knife for this job! Mine did it, but it sure wasn't pretty, and wasn't all that fast and easy, either. It just happened to be the knife I had with me when I needed it.

Its all fun and games til somebody loses an eye, then its fun and games you can't see.
