People with subtle "WTS" attempts

#1

Post by Blerv »

We can't control the 1st post superstars. Even the ones who accidentally ask I would rather politely explain because not everyone catches the stickied threads.

As for the rest of the coy, subtle and cocky folks who think they are being witty...

Stop it.

It's not funny and the hint that you have knives to sell or want to buy them is annoying as heck. It's in the rules and you know it! Shame on the vendors acting as enthusiasts and soliciting via subterfuge too.

It's a small detail and perhaps one most don't care about. I log on only enjoy time here, learn, and help. If you have less than noble goals, I speak only for myself, but please stop or go elsewhere.

Feel free to report it when you see it. I can't be everywhere at once but if you report it and bring it to my attention I'll take care of it. ;)

Thanks for the post Blerv.
There is nothing more important than this one day.

Yes, I find that annoying as well. I see people do that and it really does irritate me. It's like they are so special that the rules or obvious culture does not apply to them and what they want. I would never try to sell my extra NIB CF para with perfectly centered blade in any type of subtle mention like that.

Guess the question is, where do we draw the line. I know what I will and will not do myself, what doesn't bother me, what does, and what bothers me enough to hit the Report Post button. I'll admit to the occasion urge to smack the person posting the latest "Dealer X just got a shipment of the new Model Z" while I'm not the least bit annoyed if a legitimate Spyderco dealer, especially one who sells all their knives at full MSRP, subtly suggests that he might still have a model that's been out of production for several years in stock. But that's just me. I don't make the rules and, except or rare occasions, don't try to enforce them personally. I do use the report post function and, in all but a few cases, the things I've reported have disappeared. As have a number of posts that I read and found innocuous.

The rules should be respected and followed. I must admit, however, there has been occasion where I saw a post detailing availability of a knife I had been looking for, and took advantage of it. I dont know all the different places on the net where knives can be purchased. And my googlefu suffers. So sometimes seeing where hard to get knives may be available has helped me a time or two. Please forgive my transgressions in that regard. And I just want to say thank you to everyone here on the Spyderco forums. I have learned a trememendous amount here.
Thanks,

Marty

Exactly. I've even reconsidered things i post because i'm pretty sure they could be mistaken as fishing posts. I'd give an example but i don't wanna be mistaken for a fishing post :D

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I will do more reporting when necessary, thanks Kristi :) .

As Paul said we all have our own sensitivities to it and intent is sometimes difficult to gauge. My own occasional (very seldom) frustrations cant shift the overall enjoyment this place brings. Overall for a public forum it's an A++ community!

To me, there's a big difference between someone reporting where a knife can be had from a legitimate dealer, and someone trying to be sly, using these boards as a WTS to sell from their personal collection. There are plenty of other places to BST, but I've gotten a few of my rare and discontinued models, and sprints thanks to someone posting a heads up about items at dealers I didn't previously know about.

I am pretty sure that I will be able to find a way to acquire what I want, as I can.

That said, I am still trying to figure out how to plant a money tree here. ;)

I'd agree wholeheartedly with this. I've been able to pick up a few disco'd or hard to come by knives, thanks to some tips on here. Since the topic is being discussed, what's the opinion of keeping a list of knives I like but don't have yet in my signature?

I hate it when people post and if you read between the lines you can see that they are trying to sell their knife. The only time that doesn't bother me is when someone is hinting at a stretch zdp WHICH I WOULD BUY

I'd agree.
I've helped fellow members locate a particular item they were looking for. I usually take it to PM though. Something like "Hey, I saw you were looking for (insert awesome unobtainable knife here), I saw one for sale here." I don't see anything wrong with that.

If I have something to sell I just use BF, but I'm a bit turned off by some of the attitude I get from potential buyers. That's a different topic for another time though.

So, is it wrong then to point out knives at a certain dealer or just say how good they are in general? Being in Canada, it's a bit harder to obtain things, and I'm gonna help all the people I can. I'm not selling my knives, but pointing out a good Spyderco dealer - business for Spyderco - not a bad thing.

- best wishes, Jazz.
