Any Non-Stainless Projects on the Horizon?

#1

Post by The Student »

I think I'm starting to find my niche as far as blade steel goes, and non-stainless tool & die steel seems to lure me like no other. I really like the look of a nice patina, what can I say. It seems that most of the offerings in these alloys preform well above my expectations, maybe I'm still too green, but in my opinion they out perform most stainless offerings (in my price ranges). Yes there are some steels such as S90V that I missed out on multiple times and have no experiences with that may change my views. So my question for fellow patina lovers, what would you like to see in a Spydie, steel, type of knife (fixed blade, folder, ect.), blade shape, lock type, and primary use.

I would like to see a 5-6 in. Fixed blade, spear point, camp knife in 3v
OR a leaf shaped folder with a liner lock in M4 with natural G10 for EDC.

Looking forward to everyone's ideal non-stainless Spydie!

I`d like to see a 1095 slipit, or maybe a non stainless Delica/Endura.

Have a read here, Sal mentions a Caly 3 in superblue, and also a stretch in SB further down the track:

The upcoming tuff is also in 3v steel I believe.

.... And the upcoming Bradley Air.

I'm with you Student. The non stainless blades are my favorites, by far. I love watching the patina develope and the quality of the edge is beyond anything I get from any stainless (and I have a few ;) with VG10 probably coming the closest) I may have to touch them up a bit more frequently than an S90V or M390 but they sharpen easily and the edge is a joy to use.

I really wish there was a US/Taiwan slicer to compete with the Stretch that Sal could drop some M4 into. Hmmmmm ;)

Yeah non-stainless perks my ears up too. But I want a combo edge too, which never seems to be offered for sprint runs as far as I can tell.

I think there were 3 Goddard Sprints in Combo Edge (one by accident). Goddard would be a nice model to put Super Blue in, IMO.

I find nothing to complain about on my O1 tool-steel Bushcraft as well. While my sweat seems to be a bit acidic, at least the humidity around here isn't too bad, so as long as I wipe my blades off after I use them, I haven't had a real problem with rust. Though I haven't found anything to dislike about my H1 and other stainless blades either :) . If it has "Spyderco" stamped on the blade, I like it.

For me it would be a Military in K294/CPM 10V or K390 either one around 63/64 HRC. :D  :spyder:

Yeah, Jim's model would be a one in a lifetime model unlike anything the industry has ever seen. Spyderco and Sal do have a few of those notches already so nothing would really surprise me. He's as bad a steel junky as any of us, but it's his money and company who is doing the work and putting the money up. No question a run of a thousand to twelve hundred in that steel at those specs would be pre sold in days after pre orders opened up. That would even be with warnings about not prying, etc.

Myself, I'm hoping they have some spare cruwear taking up space they need to make something Golden out of. Something hard use as this stuff is not quite 3V, but not that far behind either. It would be a perfect Manix XL, or Chinook type steel. It likely could sub for 3V in the Tuff even. RC 62 would be perfect for hard use. No need to drop this one below rc 60. It may not be the leader at any one attribute but it's a very high scorer all around and seems to really like to cut abrasive stuff. The old school paper cutters were Vascowear and they would go 15 years of cutting paper at schools without sharpening s.
