More than just a Cat scratch ...

#1

Post by DRH »

It's been a while since I saw one of these posts ... so here you go. Here's the culprit .... the Cat.

Image

This is my around the house, carry in my comfy fleece pants knife. I was in the process of touching it up after some heavy use. Well, my depth perception isn't what it used to be at close distances with my progressive lenses. I was reaching across the blade to grab my angle cube and grossly misjudged where my hand was traveling in relation to the blade, firmly fixed in my Wicked Edge. The result ....

Image

Now, normally for minor Spydie bites ... I just grab the super glue and fix'er up on the spot. This one, however, immediately screamed to me ... gonna need some stitches here! Went to the ER to get stitched up and had to tell them to put a rush on it, cause I had to get back to finish sharpening the Cat!

Yeouch! That's definately going to leave a mark. :( If it makes you feel any better, though, I have a similar scar that nearly wraps around the first knuckle of my right index finger. (The culprit: my SS SE Harpy). Even after eight years, my finger is still pretty crooked when fully extended... Hope you heal quickly, mate. :)

Thanks for opening up :D

Were the nurses impressed with how clean a cut a Spyder bite makes? It's like a stitchers dream come true. ;) Glad it wasn't deeper, but it should leave a cool scar with a story as I always say starting right now.

The funny thing is ..... this happened very early in the process. I would hate to think of the outcome had I been almost done .... I keep my knives extremely sharp .... and the 440C on the Cat, while it doesn't hold an edge all that long, sharpens up very nicely! Anyway ... the whole thing could have been a lot worse. Nothing major was cut (no nerves, tendons, or large blood vessels), so I will not have any range of motion/use problems after this thing is healed. The other funny thing is (or sad ... in that I should have, by now, learned my lesson) ..... this is not the first time I've misjudged distances and nicked/sliced myself doing the same thing ... though most others were minor, in comparison! What I wouldn't give to have the eyesight of my youth!!

Ya thats a good one. Glad your alright. Im guessing they wont be using that pic to promote the sharpener or maybe they will. Proves it works lol. Skin slicing aside, how do you like that system? Any comparison thoughts with the sharpmaker?

I'm with you, DRH! Hope you heal up soon.

I've caught myself several times leaning across my WEPS with a mirror edge grinning up at me, waiting to strike.

One strategy to address this is to get in the habit of folding the knife closed whenever you step away from the actual sharpening. It has become almost reflexive with me now. Whenever I don't have "stone on steel", the knife is almost always closed. Granted, this doesn't work with fixed blades...

Hope you heal soon, my friend!

I've seen pictures of knives mounted in the WE and videos of it being used and have never thought about the blade being up like that. Have you ever seen a spider waiting for it's prey? That's what your cat looks like. Do you feel like an insect? :) Definately a nice bite. I recommend not doing that anymore. I don't practice what I preach though, just no bites that big lately. Have you made up a story to tell the ladies yet? :D Fighting terrorists, saving little old lady's purse, etc. :)

I once was told that there is a ledgend that when you are cut by a knife you are bound together forever. I have a lot of Spydies and they are all bound to me.

I hope the Spydies that are bound to you are yours. I'd hate to think there are lots of people out there with spydies that are binding their knives to you. :)

Hehehe, Razorsharp's friend cut himself on RS's knife. I hope that he's not bonded to that knife as well.

I usually bond myself with superglue after an 'incident'. Haven't bonded the knife to me yet!

And DRH, eyesight might be a little off but you still got a good picture of it!

All mine. I don't mess with other folk knives.I might look at them and admire them but, I try not to get too close to the edge.

It is the Wicked Edge sharpening system. This and the Edge Pro are considered by many to be two of the best guided angle sharpening system. Naturally .... I prefer the Wicked Edge. Between it and the Spyderco Sharpmaker (along with a variety of strops .... I can handle virtually all of my sharpening needs. Here is the link. While there, you should browse around the forum. You will learn much.

Agree with DRH. I have a Wicked Edge (WEPS) and love it to death. Their Forum is very informative, and Clay, the owner of WEPS is a great guy to deal with.
