Thanks again guys. I have thought about the Delica, but I also thought about a slipjoint since he is new to knives. When he held my Strider and wanted to close it he looked puzzled. When I showed him how to close it he said, "inside...I would have never thought you would use something on the inside to close it."

Although I am not a pastor, but as a member of a ministry team also used to talk in front of our church.
Last Sunday I stood up and preach with my G10 Delica clipped in my pocket. I think nobody cared. :D

If he worries about what others would say, I suggest an UKPK or other low riding, wire clipped knife as it is rather in unperceivable.
Actually I went to church several times with my Manix2 too. :p

Maybe he could teach the church about Luke 22:36:
"But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no :spyder: sword :spyder: sell his cloak and buy one"

This is the passage I used to quote when a christian asks me about my hobby.

Are you picking the Tenacious because he was admiring yours? If it was me I would probably go with something like a Cat G10, Dragonfly Salt or a Delica in a fun color just to be on the more conservative side.
Exactly my thoughts. If not look at the Ambitious, more "friendly"

Dragonfly or Delica SS would be perfect for engraving, sorry I missed that in the original post.

SpyderNut wrote:I'll second that. Another idea would be the SS Cricket. You can readily purchase one for about $50 to $60 bucks, it is small and "sheeple" friendly, and you could always have one/both sides of the SS scales engraved or personalized. The Cricket also makes a killer money clip. Good luck!

Cricket!

I just gifted one myself.

Hey, I have a friend who basically fits all the criteria you mentioned (hes not a pastor though). I got him a stag handled kiwi and he carries it everyday. I think that knife is the way to go for what you're looking for: super classy, small and non-threatening, inexpensive, very useful blade shape, ergonomics are outstanding, and most importantly it is VERY COOL. Just my 2 pennies.

I totally agree. Find out the guy's favorite color and get him a FFG Delica in that color if possible. It may be possible to laser etch something onto the blade. The stainless Delica is too slick and heavy for my tastes, but it provides handles that can be engraved.

I think it short-sighted and a bit snobbish to exclude consideration of all imports for a newbie.

Exactly 50 Spydies ago -- I just counted, dupes included -- my first was a Persistence.

It's still one of my favorite shapes and sizes.

And, yes, it's one of my dupes. Even after I began buying more expensive models, I still liked it enough to buy a second. :)

Another vote for a Delica4. It's a great knife, NKP friendly, and will do whatever he needs. The FRN Lightweight should meet your budget.

If you don't go with the Delica4 my next vote would be for a Cat, great knife and comes in under your budget. Please let us know what model you end up going with once you have made your decision.

Did someone? Most the recommendations have been non USA including the op suggesting a Tenacious.

As I was reading your post I was thinking of an all stainless Dragonfly with plain edge. A cross between a tank and a Rolex watch these little gems are very engraveable either on the blade or handle. Also, if he didn't want to carry it on a clip this knife blends in well with your change or is perfect for your key chain.

I am little late to the party, but IMHO nothing classier that Cento3 out of spydercos under $50. Plus you will not find a better slicer. Still strong enough for house remodeling. One of our forum members did this few years ago.
"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf"

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

I love the Cento line but black handles and grinds lines to tend to be slightly more intimidating than pastels and flat grinds. IMHO brown is a nice color for almost anyone but others like the green are pretty fun.

Perhaps an FRN Native? A backlock is a classic and doesn't require a lot of practice. Of course D4 or a Dfly would be great too but I figured I'd throw in a US made choice too. Maybe the "Golden CO, U.S.A. Earth" would be appreciated.

I'm sure the Delica was the first model for many. Myself included.
