A lot of my knives are at a lower angle than 30°-40° angles , and it takes a really long time to get them sharp, and I don't really want to spend the money on the diamond rods(i might get the UF rods) and I read somewhere about wrapping coarse sandpaper around the sharpmaker rods, and was wandering if this would work for quick edge removal? I also read on here about clamping coarse flat stones on the sharpmaker rods,& would this work better than the sandpaper??
Thanks.
Also I read in the sharpmaker manual about putting the rods in the dishwasher for cleaning them, would this work or no?

In my opinion the diamond rods are well worth the price i find them as useful if not more so than the UF's, i have 2 sets and i use them for everything from axes to knives, swords and screwdrivers, both in the sharpmaker and freehand. As for the sandpaper and coarse stones idea i would think flat stones would be the better option, ive read that it works quite well and im sure someone who has done it will chime in, but it seems a bit finnicky to me.
You are only as sharp as your knife. "Life is short. If you don't stop and look around... and do whatever you want all the time... then you could miss it."

If your edges are already lower than 30° or 40° you should be able to get them sharp quickly with the Sharpmaker. That is unless they are REALLY dull. Reprofiling shouldn't be necessary based on what you put in your post. I may not know exactly what your goal is. Are you trying to get rid of the lower angles completely? If so, I'd think you are in for a lot of time sharpening even if you had the diamond rods.

oh sorry I meant to say that the angles are higher than the 30°-40° angles...like when I put the sharpie on the edge it is only hitting the top of the edge and not hitting the actual cutting edge :ojackknifeh wrote:If your edges are already lower than 30° or 40° you should be able to get them sharp quickly with the Sharpmaker.
