"Never go anywhere without a knife."

I though some of you might enjoy this true story:

Most of last year I was contracted as a civilian consultant to a major metropolitan police department. This required me to fly from my home-base each week to the client city and, you guessed correctly, I was unable to take my EDC folder with me on the flights.

During one of the many technical meetings I attended I struck up a conversation with a veteran officer who was into collecting knives. He showed me a couple of his folders and I mentioned to him that the night before I had seen an episoded of NCIS in which one of the main characters, Special Agent Jethro Gibbs, had visited his boss in the hospital and slipped him a knife for self-protection which he later used to ward off the bad guy. The officer shared with me that he was an avid NCIS fan and this was one of his favorite episodes as for many years he held the same rule as agent Gibbs; "Never go anywhere without a knife." I lamented that I was unable to carry my EDC folder on the plane and he thought it would be best if I bought a knife locally and kept it on-site.

As I walked into my on-site office the next day I was surprised to find on my desk a black box laying on a printed piece of paper. A big smile came across my face as I read the caption at the top of the page; "Rule #9: Never go anywhere without a knife." Under the caption was a screen print of the scene in which Gibbs gave the knife to Vance. I opened the box, inside was a folding knife about the same size as the one on the NCIS episoded I had seen just two nights before. The assisted-opening blade popped into place with a firm snap revealing a gently curved blade. I carefully folded the blade back into the handle, clipped it to my waste band and headed down the hall to my benefactor's desk where I thanked him for the very thoughtful gift.

While my "NCIS" knife is some what large to be clipped to my pocket I do carry it in my brief case as a reminder of my friend.

Thats awesome. Would it be possible to store knives in different places you visit? Like you have a desk at each place? Or maybe you can just time capsule bury it lol.

That is one of the best rules that Gibbs has. I live by that rule and have gone as far as mailing a knife to my destination hotel before I embarq on a trip that requires flight. What a terrific gesture from a fellow knife lover!

Awesome story and a great gift. I've seen pics of a CRK Sebenza that had that motto engraved on it, seems like an excellent text on a knife.

I am not sure of the brand as the only markings are on the blade with "440" on one side and "China" on the other.

Fortunately I fly very little any more so this is not a problem. However, if I run a contract that requires that kind of travel in the future I will place a knife in my suit case and check it the first time as opposed to carry-on just to get one on-site.

Great story and a nice gift indeed, glad to see people who think alike are still taking care of each other there.

my brother, my girlfriend and I have a similar program for when we pick each other up at airports.

hey guys,
i don't even go to bed without a knife.
my wife thinks i'm paranoid, but i clip a :spyder: to the waistband of my boxers when i hit the sack.
it sure beats fumbling around in the dark trying to find the knife on the nightstand.
call me crazy if you want, but i always like having a knife close by!
later,
don

Lol. I have a knife and flashlight clipped into my shorts that are right by the bed, and a medium sized fixed blade in a sheath attached to the side of the bed opposite my door :P

Great story, John. I'm sure you'll always have fond memories of that knife and your trip.

Although I don't go to bed with a knife (*grinning at Don*), I am normally never too far away from a blade or barrel (or even my nine iron, if push comes to shove. LOL).

EDCing a knife is essential and necessary

That is a great inspiring story Brother and we appreciate you posting it. I"ve pretty much got the same mentality. I don't go anywhere without at the very least 2 of my Spyders with me at all times. I even carry my old fixed blade, VG-10 Temperance 1 model when I can which is 90% of the time>> and I got one guy to leave the property that got nasty with me one day and believe me they do respect a blade that will shave paper into micro strips.

I know you can't take a knife to a GUN FIGHT so to speak but you really just don't encounter many gun fights now a days ( thank GOD) at least you don't in civilian life for the most part. But if I was in your profession I would sleep with a couple within arms reach.

It really blows me away how many decent men I meet in a week who somehow think it's immoral or bad to carry a knife>> that's just how emaculated much of our society is now a days. Truthfully I think a person is very "un-prepared" who doesn't carry and use knives. I use all three of my EDCs during the day at least once a day and my main EDC ( C-60 Ayoob) I use at least 12 to 20 times a day.

So GOD Bless the GReat Spyder Factory and God Bless real men like yourself Sir :)

I used to always have a knife on me, but didn't know it was a Gibbs rule until a year or so ago. Since 9/11, I feel naked when flying, which I'm doing 15 to 18 days a month. :(

That sucks! Luckily, my work doesn't require flying, because I gave it up simply because I cannot have a knife on my person on a plane.
