The Deacon wrote:Which has a street price around $120-$125, so I think you're probably right, although I can't say I agree totally with your reasoning. Where locks are concerned, "better" is a matter of opinion. Personally, I find naked ball bearing locks a real PITA to release, so IMHO, they about the worst ambi lock made while midlocks are the best. But that's really neither here nor there, the pertinent question would be the relative cost of each to manufacture. I have no idea what that is, nor do I know the relative costs of S30V and VG-10. I do know Sal has said having anything made is Japan costs 1.25 as much as making it here, and that the conversion rate favors the Yen right now.
Your right, I used the wrong term there, I wanted to say that the ball bearing lock is probably more expensive to manufacture. I didn't know that making knives in Japan was more expensive, it kind of doesn't make sense since in my experience so far, Golden made is much better quality then Seki made. But I only have two knives to compare so it probably isn't fair to built a wrong opinion about the Seki maker.

Even though I've been lurking here for years, I registered just to vote on this. I have been wanting this knife for a long time but just can't bring myself to buy it given that it's stainless and thus I am not willing to pay the current going rate. Honestly, if there weren't so many other great Spyderco knives coming this year, I would probably just break and get the SS version, even though I really dislike SS for the handle.

I would love a black FRN version!

P.S. ~ Thanks Sal and Spyderco for so many great knives!

ive thought about the FRN Lava many times and everytime for some reason i picture 2 things.

1. Yellow FRN Lava built without liners like the D3 & E3, this would be alot thinner and lighter, dont know if a barrel bolt would work though, maybe a mini barrel bolt of some sort.

2. Yellow again FRN Lava built with liners like the D4 & E4 of course the exact opposite of the other option and the clip would not be an issue.

i usually like silver clips but the black clips on yellow always look good to me. btw this has nothing to do with H1 i just like the yellow on the Salts.

wow almost forgot a wharnecliff blade is a must.

Read all the comments. The FRN is out of the question! I am pretty sure that if there will be a sprint, it will be the same design, no wharnecliff.

Finding someone to wharnie it is far easier than drumming up a g10 model. If Spyderco makes it the rest is easy :) .

It looks funky but is a huge performance boost.

In a perfect world I'd love that. Really it was a knife (IMHO) that always deserved a hawkbill. I can totally understand space constraints and mainstream appeal though of the original drop point. The wharnie was just easier to mod.

Where did you get and what size is the shackle for the lanyard?

Bring back the Lava? Please. I carried mine for a few years. I retired it after it developed the dreaded side-to side blade play. My two requests on a new Lava are: 1. An adjustable pivot screw, and 2. no bright handle colors.

sal wrote:Hi Alan,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

We've been discussing a Kopa sprint. The maker that made the Kopa's doesn't have the confidece to work with all of the exotic materials so we're trying to find something nice that they can work with.

I believe the Lava sprint is in-the-works.

Great news :)
Now I am curious to know more about the knife. Handle material, color... :)

redyps04 wrote:Haha! I like that quote too.

I guess another question I'm attempting to bring up is why in the world do some knives which almost have no backing at all and sell horribly as a result (like the White Goddard Sprint, no offense to Wayne himself) come out of seemingly nowhere, while forum members clamor for other sprints which never end up seeing the light of day? Even though I'll be the first to say that Spyderco gets a lot right, a lot of the time, I do think there seems to be a bit of disconnect in the area of sprint runs for some reason or another, and I guess I'm trying to understand Spyderco's selection process regarding sprints. The Dodo eventually got a revival, if for nothing other than pure mob rule. But for the most part I look at some sprint runs and have to wonder where in the world they came from. I can't be the only one who wonders this, right?
Simple... They think with their checkbook (and far less than most companies too). I am more amazed that they listen to us clamoring forumites at all. Just because they dont always do what us on the forum think is best doesnt mean they arent listening. As blerv (i bellive) said, we usually talk the loudest, but dont always put our money where our mouth is. Sal isnt going to release a knife he expects to do poorly, and remember spyderco DOES like to surprise us, so the more randomn sprints that no one is asking for are welcome! who knows you might not know you want it until they release it!
