How it's Made on Discovery Channel - requested a program on Spyderco folders

#1

Post by KardinalSyn »

Hi everyone,

This may get mixed reactions from you all but I just wrote to Discovery Channel requesting for them to do a program on folding knives and base it on the production of Spyderco knives. Apologies to Spyderco if this is not a good idea.

I hope that they consider it favorably.

Gonna wait and see :D

That would be so freaking cool. i have seen a video about the factory, shows the hollow grind machine, and sharpenign and stuff , pretty cool, but "how its made" would be more in depth

Yeh, I think I saw an episode about some brand of folding knife. The "how it's made" people came up with a really stupid tag line. I went along the lines of "the knives are so sharp, so deadly that they are regulated". Not verbatim but along the lines of that poop.

I believe that was an episode of "Factory Made", that episode was about Gerber automatic knives (chisel-ground tanto blades) - which *are* regulated (no matter what us knifeholics think about that law). But it was still a good laugh. These shows lean heavily on the hyperbole because of their brevity - each little episode - there are three in a 30 minute program - is about 7-8 minutes long. There is only so much you can say in that short of a time slot...

...and I never get tired of watching the freakin' lasers cut blade blanks...

Thanks. :)

And the poop actually is "So sharp, so powerful, so lethal it's restricted by law". LMAO!

I saw one episode of this show (or a similar show) in which they showed how Case knives are made. Pretty cool.

I hope someone from Spyderco chimes in with their feedback on this. Not sure if only one request would make this happen but there is an option on the discovery channel website to make the suggestion. It would probably be months before something happens though.

The short one with Sal and the Spyderwrench is cool, but we need a whole hour, or a half hour even. They did a episode that was supposed to include Kershaw footage and it took forever for it to air, then it was like two minutes of the whole show. To boot they made it sound like all they made was knives for the police. Lame.

That would be awesome and a great idea :) . However, I think due to trade secrecy it's a slim chance even if Discovery was interested.

Modern Marvels did Kershaw in a show about "things we keep in our pockets". It was pretty good, but only about 5-8 minutes.

A custom maker made it on a different episode. I can't remember his name. Chefs knives IIRC.

Some few years ago Swiss army knives, Cutco, and as mentioned Case had their 3=5 minute clips on "How it's made". Several tool manufacturers, and a razor manf. have been featured as well. All these were interesting but none got into depth on anything including what steel was used, etc. The closese was the razor company which mentioned that they used special razor steel. They showed a huge roll of probably a ton's worth of steel being fed into stamping equipment.
