Luckily my fiance hates guns otherwise, I'd probably never have any money for knives...

I would consider a custom knife also. If I had the extra money (up to $1000) I'd search for a knifemaker who would make one folder with my specs (blade steel, shape, lock type, handle material, shape, color, etc. etc. etc. etc.) Anything I could think of. This would get me closer to "the one" knife we all search for. I say up to $1000 because for "the one" knife we may need to spend whatever it takes. If I'm going to spend $500 on one pocket knife that tells me I'm also willing to spend $700 if I have it. If I'm going to be a $500 idiot, I might as well be a $700 idiot. :) Then when you go to work and use your knife someone will surely say "nice knife, how much did it cost? I'd like to get one." When you say $700 they won't even make fun of you. They will probably feel sorry for your family and go to the grocery store and buy you some groceries and leave them on your door step. They will probably feel sorry for your family, because they have to live with an idiot like you. :D I know this to be true. Lots of people feel sorry for my family. :D

Other than that I'd definately look into a Sebenza. But for that kind of cash I'd rather hold one first. But, most reseller sites have a 30 day return policy as long as you haven't sharpened it or dropped it in a mud hole. I'd love to have a small Sebenza and I would if I had enough "extra" money. Right now, I have enough Spyderco's to make a great user EDC set of knives. If I want anything "different" or "better" I'm going to have to spend serious bucks.

Another thing to consider is you may have a coupel of knives you would trade for a used, in great condition Sebenza on BF.com. I've seen a few for trade asking for Spyderco's before. Some will accept knives plus cash to make a fair trade. Just a thought.

Beautiful knives. I'm beyond content with Manix 2's, though some day I'd like to try a flat grind ZDP189 Spydie.

For me, personally, I'd rather put the $500 towards the auto loan (2 month's payments), bank it, or buy a few preventative maintenance things for the Ford.

Those Sebenza's sure do have beautiful lines though....

I have a sm. seb. I don't regret the purchase, but I wouldn't do it again, if that makes any sense. Beautifully made knife, but ergonomically challenged when compared to many spydercos. For the kind of money you're talking about spending, I'd look around for a Spyderco ATR TI or a custom or small batch knife. I really don't believe that there's $500 worth of knife in a Sebenza. You might also consider one of Brad Southard's knives. They can be had for your price range or less.

There's lot of good comments here.

I like my Sebenzas just fine. I carried the small one for a while but then I'd become accustomed to the Spyderco ergos and even after a few months of use, I just couldn't get over the difference. The combination of not having a thumbhole and the idiosyncrasies of framelocks made me go back to my Spydie. I'm still hanging on to them though.

Great knives, smooth as glass, but not my preferred choice due to my personal likes.

First philosophical fight my then fiance--now wife of 13 years-- and I had was about gun ownership (she was raised in Northern Cal.). Took 6 or 7 years before I bought a couple shotguns and a few years after that to get her on board with pistols. I had her to the range/gun shop a few weeks ago and she actually asked to see a pistol!!! Her big question, "does it come in any other colors?"

If I had 500 dollars to spend and wanted something different I would buy a Zero Tolerance 300, 301, 302 or 303 and take the 275 or so change. and add three ot four more nice Case Sway back jacks to my collection of those. I'm sorry but no two small slabs ot titanium with a blade sandwiched in the middle is worth 500 dollars.

I have tried them out twice, once as a Passaround, and once as a purchase. I have the same conclusion both times, that it is just not for me. But, there is enough (deserved) hype about them, that all knife knuts should own one when it can be comfortably afforded, at least for a period of time. If nothing else to be able to look at it and say yea or nea and have peace about it. And the best way to do this is watch BF exchange, and get it there, then if it doesn't do it for ya, you can always resell it and only be out $10-$20. Infact, I made about $.80 on my Sebenza owning experience, even after shipping and PP fees.

In all truthfulness, it just made me appreciate my G-10 E4 even more.

Love my Para 2's and I love my CRK's CRK actually encourages you to take apart and clean your knife..... I love how it goes back together, just snug it up and it's the same every time, no "tuning" involved. Use it like you hate it and sharpen it like you love it.

I say, go for it! Look around the forums, you can find a great deal on a safe queen of a knife...

Since I purchased my first CRK folder, a Small Regular, in early 2006, no other folder has kept my attention for any real length of time. From Striders to ZTs and Hinderers and from high-end productions to full-on customs, no other folder has lasted more than a couple weeks before my CRK bumps it out of my pocket. I know it's not for everyone, but it best defines what I'm looking for in a folder and I'd be perfectly content( and a fair bit more wealthy ;) ) if it became the last knife I ever bought.

I have owned a Large Regular before and probably should have bought a small one. Honestly coming from Spyderco folders you would probably be disappointed I think, I know I was. For $450 I got two Ti scales and a S30V blade that IMO didn't hold an edge at all, plus was hard to sharpen. The thumb stud is an ergonomic nightmare and it is heavy (For a large). Mine came from the factory with a slightly off center blade too. Contrast to the Sage 2 I purchased. I paid $125 for a NIB one on the USN forum, has two nicely contoured Ti scales, perfect blade centering and perfect fit and finish. It opened way smoother than the Sebenza and the blade was the same but had a decent heat treat so it could actually cut something without dulling immediately. Yeah the hole in the blade makes it way easier to open too. To me it's a no brainer, I appreciate Chris Reeve's various innovations to the knife world, but his knives are very overpriced for what you get. Again this is only my opinion and experience, your mileage may vary.

I've decided that I really want a small Sebenza too. I need to get a left handed one though. I might trade my S90V Manix 2 or something like that for one.

I'm just a little bummed about the softness of the steel. I wish that they would treat it a bit harder.
Idk, that idea, trade my “s90v Manix 2” for one?
Uhhh, I think your coming up $300 short there aren’t you?
Sink CRK knives are $475–$600 that’s just if there isn’t anything “special” about them. I tell you I don’t see it.
I’ve got a Spyderco fixed blade custom mule team knife. I would not trade it for the $500 Sebenza.

Mine, the blade will never rust, it’s LC200N steel, I forget but left than $100 like most mule team blades are. I put halpern titanium scales on it; it’s in a boltaron sheath, easy to clip to belt. It’s beautiful. I had a guy offer me his custom yohimbo (never been sharpened, some high end steel exclusive issue) but I turned it down. The scales are like carbon fiber, but more diamond-pattern. I have one more with RWL-34 steel, cocobolo dymondwood scales (more 3D than the flat one previously on the LC200N). They’re both the best I own. But I carry a PM2 or a custom 535 with titanium grey scales over black s30v steel more often. If I added these four knives up, it would equal the cost of a midrange Sebenza, $5-or $600.(?)!
For what? Will it drive me to work or cook dinner?
I just do not get it. Most are 3” pocketknives.

You do know this thread is nearly ten years old, and that the member you quoted hasn't posted since 2014? I don't mind seeing old threads pop up, but thought I'd mention it.

Re the topic, I own a Sebenza and I really like it, but I can understand why someone would be turned away by the price. Especially since the materials you get are nothing special in 2021. But I do think that a lot of that cost goes into the consistency and very high build quality of these knives.

I don't mind it so much when people come back to add new information that contributes to the thread but I find it funny when people try and continue a conversation that has been dead for 10 years like they are going to get a response from that person.
