Did your Tan CPM-M4 Manix 2 from BentoBox come with pitting like this?

Post by MODiFiEDZ »

Have you bought the M4 Manix with Tan G10 from http://www.BentoBoxShop.com? When you opened the box what condition was the blade? Did it have rust or patina, or did it have deep pitting all around the edge, pivot, & choil like mine did. I emailed Spyderco & they said that it is normal for M4 to rust like this & I can use metal polish to remove rust spots. I knew I had to keep it oiled as I do with all my knives, stainless or not. I don't know if it is possible to stop the pitting from getting deeper or not. Does oil prevent further oxidation of the pitting?
Here is the link to my YouTube video of the pitting under a microscope.

There's the link for those of us that aren't on a mobile device. I don't own a Manix 2 so I can't verify this for sure. However, I would have to imagine that it's not covered by warranty since the knife was taken apart

Mine is the same; I think this is normal for these. Not normal for M4 as my GB is perfect. Only issues with BBS. You can probably clean it up a touch with a wire brush/wheel and protect it with something to help prevent further issues

That pitting does not look like a result of rust, but rather that of manufacturing process. However it wont affect functionality. The part of my GB that hits the stop pin looks to have the same type of "issue", I dont really consider it an issue (no the GB is not perfect, there are a few things that can be done better, but it will increase cost and really nit picking and being anal, it is a great knife with excellent fit and finish for the price regardless). If you want a knife that has no imperfections, expect to pay a lot more as getting rid of imperfections like these require a lot more hand time and time=money.

My M4 Manix2 came without any blemishes, pits or anything else on the blade. I did get it when it first came out though. I imagine your knife has been sitting at bentoboxshop since it was released. Who knows what kind of atmosphere is in their storage area? I have no experience with removing rust but lots of guys here do and can help you. Also, I've put a patina on my blade and always use Tuf-Glide which is a great corrosion prevention product.

I don't think so. I will try to take some extreme closeups of mine later tonight.

To be fair to BBS, he did an unboxing vid nearly two months ago and obviously didn't notice the pitting then. Why is he only posting about this issue now?

It seems to me that he never took proper care of his knife. I'm not being mean or anything, just pointing out an observation that he asked if anyone else noticed this issue as soon as they first took the knife out of the box, when he seems to have had the knife a while.

Seriously?
That kind of pitting has probably been there since before Spyderco completed polishing the blade.

Is it sub-optimal? Sure. Is it going to effect the blade in any way, shape, or form? Obviously not. If it were only in the pivot, and not visible on the assembled knife, Spyderco would rightly say "we see no problem with this knife" and send you on your way. As some of the pitting is visible once assembled, you *may* get a warmer response, but other than re-finishing the jimping cuts (which isn't easy...) I'm not sure they have any options. (One of the unfortunate risks of sprint-run manufacturing.)

Before Spyderco is involved, it is often simpler to just return it to the dealer as you don't appear to be satisfied with the finish. Have you asked them about it?

That's the optimimum way to handle any of these kinds of "issues". However since the knife left Bento a couple of months ago according to this thread, and has been taken apart, it might not be possible.

I find flaws in my production knives when I look at them closely with a 15X loupe. I imagine I'd find more with a 30x or 40x. The closer you look, the more you'll find.

Judging by the video, it was already taken apart and might not be eligible for return or warranty.

Hmm...video isnt working for me.

Regardless I assumed my M4 Manix2 from BBS would come with tiny spots of rust all over it. I had heard horror stories about M4 and was shocked to see it completely perfect. It doesn't have a smudge of patina after period carrying with a light coat of mineral oil being applied every month or so.

For a steel like this even having to polish out a couple flecks isn't a big deal. You're buying it for different qualities. Then again, if I could watch the video it might change my perspective.

Do you live far up north? Possibly it experienced some frost, melted and froze again when being shipped?
