Rants are best left elsewhere. Especially relating to the hotter topics like politics, religion, and other knife makers.
Chances are the rant (I think you are constructing) has already been echoed in pages of bloody knuckle typing before. :D

I was steered to this thread by a member when I posted my own not knowing about this one, and just want to say a few things.
First - To the dad. Mr. Hobbs, great job!
Second - To the son. Rivers, I saw you on the news interview and you are a brave boy!
Third - To Spyderco's CEO/Owner. Very classy response with your offer.
My hat goes off to all three of you.

I thought this was interesting when I saw it and thought about this thread. Not only could the father using the knife to save his son in this thread have been mauled as well, but luckily neither he nor his son contracted rabies.

Bumping this one.
For some reason this story popped into my head today and I got to wondering how these folks are doing. I think River would be around 19 years old now?

i think about this story every time someone says something silly about not needing a knife or a knife not being adequate for defense. just carry a knife. it's not that inconvenient.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Re: caly 3.5 vs. mountain lion
Rivers is doing well, thanks for thinking of him! He's grown to be a strong, steady, and intelligent man. He just finished his freshman year of college. He carries his own Caly 3.5 with him all the time, and enjoys going hiking on his own. I'm very proud of him.
We still have not been back to Big Bend. We took a couple of years off from camping - it took me that long to not be afraid of the woods at night, though I never was before.
Rivers and I talk about what happened from time to time and marvel at how bizarre of an experience it was, something out of the stone age. He's never once complained about what happened to him.
I'm very grateful to Spyderco, Knife Rights and the whole knife community for the support they gave, and I've especially been thrilled to see the progress Knife Rights has made in expanding Americans' abilities to carry a knife everywhere they go. I believed then and still do that we don't have claws because we're meant to carry knives.
edit/ps: while I still love the Caly 3.5, I enjoy the lightweight knives available these days and rotate between a Para 3 LW, a Manix 2 LW and a Mini Bugout.

Re: caly 3.5 vs. mountain lion
I'll take my bigger 4" knives every day carry everytime...
This was a heck of a read and could have been way worse for sure. Thanks for bringing this thread back up.
My favorite edc's are the Police4, Military 2, and the Manix 2XL, you have any one of these three, you certainly not going to be so defenseless against any aggressor.
My favorite of these three has changed from the Police4 over the last six months or so to; the Manix 2XL and for a couple reasons.
The grip of the Manix 2XL is second to nothing imo. The blade shape being the other. The blade is bigger, not longer but bigger and certainly stronger with it having more steel in it. It would be what I draw ever time in a fight for life.
So glad to read that you all are good and whole now, something that horrific could have unwound any of us and certainly at his age at the time .

Wow I remember reading this thread years ago. Glad you are both doing well.

Slashing damage is one thing, but in a situation like this the depth of penetration is going to make a world of difference so a longer blade is absolutely a good idea. And this is a shorter hair animal, God forbid it was a bear with thicker fur, then you probably couldn't slash and cut through their coat even with a Yojumbo so stabbing would be your only hope, and you'd want to get deep enough to hit something important.

That's awesome man! Glad to hear back. You both have an amazing one-up story for the camp fire for sure.
