Unfortunately, I never purchased any of the CoPilot's children/descendants (e.g., Lava, Pegasus). Worthy knives one-and-all...

Same here, I EDC'ed that knife for 20 years. It's still sitting on my dresser ready to be used at a moment's notice.

Then I got bitten by the bug again and can't stop buying new knives!

I'm fine with not having a weapon. What bugs me is being without the tool.

You might pick up a Leatherman Style PS to carry with the Spydie. They are cheap and TSA approved. While the micro-scissors don't exactly compare its better than nothing.

Cheers and welcome to the forums!
This sounds like a good idea. Is there a TSA approved multi tool with scissors and a flashlight? (I wonder how Australia feels about multi tools)

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Sal and co have already been thinking about this market.

Vaisforlovers,

Welcome to the Forums! Glad to have you here. :) I also feel your pain regarding traveling sans knives. :( I feel like an anxious wreck without my Spydies. On a funny note, I once had 2 oz. of hair gel "confiscated" from my carry-on luggage during check in (despite said hair gel being in the required Zip-lock bag). My wife and I were just leaving on our honeymoon and I was feeling rather expansive. I knew that the legal "fluid limits" was 3 oz. for carry-on luggage. The airline security agent advised me that the hair gel would not be allowed on the plane because the bottle read "5.3 oz." (when full). I kindly pointed to the transparent bottle and showed him that there was only about 2 oz. of hair gel left in the bottle (hence my reason for packing it in my carry-on in the first place). He looked at me like I was some kind of terrorist/pervert or something. He then told me that I could "check the hair gel in my luggage" or "I could throw it away." Since I had already checked my check luggage, I wisely opted to throw it away. Moral of story: our honeymoon was very memorable...and I survived one week without hair gel! ;)

Take care,

~Michael

The only problem is that you wouldn't want it, hehe.

You *can* get small/thin light with lithium power but I'm not sure what the TSA's stance is. I know shipping primary batts is a chore and while I have gotten a CR123 flashlight through security by putting it in the dish...I wouldn't want someone to ask many questions.

The best thing to do is to have a small AA or AAA light like a Preon1. Coupled with that tiny Leatherman is a pretty great travel set and completely legal. Well, of course and checking a legal to carry Spydie in your non-carry-on. ;)

A mini-mag is always a nice alternative when flying. I used to travel for work and having it made me feel like I could defend myself if ever pressed to.
Azwaiian wrote:I actually took along a Mini Mag light and two plastic pens that I thought were strong enough for the task. I initially planned on taking a S&W Tactical pen, but I was later informed that it would be taken away by TSA. It's funny to think of what is allowed on a plane and what is not. A Mini Mag light is just as good in the role as a kubaton, as most kubatons are, IMO. I had no issues bringing that on the plane, but an actual kubaton, or what TSA would consider to be a kubaton, is not allowed! Go figure!

Glad you decided to post vaisforlovers, there are only a few here to be afraid of. :D I definately understand what you mean. There are places that I don't go to because of the no carry thing. I don't shop where I can't carry a gun and then there is teh naked thing for sure, if you have to leave the blades behind.

I recently went to an event where there is "no weapons" inside and they sometimes check you at the door. I left the guns and Spyders in the truck but did decide to take a Byrd Robin in because I just had to have something. I figured if they checked and said that I couldn't take it in, i would just donate it to the door person. I wouldn't do that with a Millie though. - They didn't even check and I then wished that my Yojimbo 2 had made the trip inside. Oh well, better safe than sorry.

If anybody's headed to Dubai anytime soon, watch out! I lost a titanium spork there a couple of weeks ago. No problem at all with the 2 locking steel caribiners on my bag, or the SureFire 6P (both make pretty decent impact weapons), but carry anything with even a hint of a point, and you're obviously up to no good.

Thanks you everyone for the advice, support, and understanding. Thanks especially to Blerv. The PS is on order and should be waiting on me when I get home. Not being self sufficient in simple tasks like opening a box or cutting a luggage tag is unacceptable.

I can't wait get my Caly back in my pocket tomorrow. Until then, to curb my Spydie adddiction I'm ordering either a Chaparral or GB as soon as I post this.

I flew Denver to Phoenix last month for my Grandson's 4th birthday. Quick trip, so just a carry-on. I stopped by Home Depot and picked up a cheap box cutter. I thought about mailing a knife to my hotel, but didn't want to risk losing a Spyderco. Then I discovered Rough Riders. I could send one to my destination and give it to the bellboy on the way home.

Been there, done that. It is a crappy feeling for sure. And not only from a self defense perspective but for the fact that I use my knife all the time for so many little things and not having it is definitely noticeable. Feel your pain.

I don't have to be at an airport to feel like this. I was on my way to work this week carrying my Sage 1 and it really felt like my Para 2 was calling me. I was gonna start a thread on this and thought folks would say I've lost it. :p I hadn't had my Para out for the past 9 or 10 days because the Sage, Caly 3, and orange and blue Gator Delica are more "people friendly" around work. Everyone says the orange and blue Delica "is so cute". It was almost like a long lost friend was calling "hold me"....."hold me" Fortunately she was in my murse in the passenger side floorboard of the car. Pulled her out, I admired her, opened and closed her a few times. checked her edge and gently tucked her back away. I could tell she was feeling better :o :spyder: Naaaah I don't love my Spydies :D

Welcome to the forum and for "daring mighty things" by posting in the forums with us. I completely sympathize with you as I just returned from a 9 day trip without a Spydie for the duration. I kept reaching for a knife that wasn't there whenever I was out and about. While watching TV in the hotel at night I didn't have a knife to open and close, nothing to cut threads, open packages with or slice off the corners of unsuspecting pieces of paper. I'm glad to be back home now and to relieve my Spydie-less anxiety I placed a Chokwe in my pocket for relief. :)

Sadly, I have another 3-4 day trip coming up and I just can't bring myself to pack a Spyderco in a checked suitcase. I've heard of too many experiences of friends and co-workers who had knives and other valuables disappear from their checked baggage. Perhaps someday I'll get a system going where I send a knife to my destination ahead of time or have a "contact" at my destination slyly pass me a folded newspaper or briefcase with a Spyderco in it as I'm exiting the airport. :p

I feel your pain. I do a lot of international travel and dont get to carry anything. I was just down in Australia where (as weve seen on the forum) knives are pretty taboo. I usually take my Squeak with me to EU, but did not even take it to Australia. Last time back from EU, I opened my luggage when I Igot home and found my Squeak on top of all my clothes. I keep it in my toiletry kit buried with toothpaste, toothbrushes, nail clippers, etc. Obviously, someone went through it and found it. It seemed to me they werre contemplating keeping the knife, but maybe decided to let me keep it, but with the message "we found this and will let you keep it...but dont bring it again??". I have resorted to some bugs and grasshoppers, but they arent much fun for me. I also hate that I have to change my money clip from basic to Spin when traveling - kind of stupid and I know o ne day that I will forget to change my Spin out and will get busted for it in TSA line - when/if that happens TSA guy will get a nice little money clip. Aahhh, the joys of air travel....NOT!

I was going to fly and see my family in Texas a month ago and was worried about the same thing. I was planning on checking my pistol also ( yes you can do this). My only concern is somebody stealing it in luggage. It ended up not mattering because the ticket prices doubled from one day to the next when checking them online, so I just drove. Don't have to worry much in my own vehicle ;) .

For those of you really craving a tool but not wanting to step up to the bulk of an MT, a small pry bar can be great.

Atwood of course is the "luxury" bar, STR's titanium bars are great, and cheap Ti and steel govt Widgey bars are at County Comm.

They sit small and light in the pocket like a knife and can be easily fiddled with in pocket.

If you would have told me the same story about a year ago I wouldn't have been able to relate. I've always carried a small Vic on my keys but always thought I would be able to go without it. Then I got into carrying a larger EDC blade and a few other tools on a daily basis and man, did it feel awkward to put them into check-in luggage when travelling by plane! For me it's not about the weapon but about the tool. It's the tool that I am missing. Once you know how often you need a knife as a tool on any regular day you're really feeling its loss.

By the way, I've nearly had my CRKT spork confiscated once when flying out of Berlin. They thought it x-rayed similar to a fist knife and those are absolutely, totally illegal here in Germany. I think they just gave it back because I was a girl and in general an unassuming traveller. So next time the spork goes into to check-in luggage, too, just to be safe :-(

The quarters in a sock do work well for the lay-days. However, for utility I just throw a cheap Swiss Army Knife or a Leatherman in my suitcase (not carry on) they never get stolen or confiscated and besides, sometimes absence makes the heart grow fonder.
