Recieved a nice gift today, arrowhead made of glass, 2 flint point giveaway

#1

Post by dbcad »

:) On my way out of work the very, very nice lady in the storeroom (Kitty) handed me a little plastic baggie with a beautiful multicolored arrowhead, mostly green and white but if you hold it up to the light you see some shades of pastel red and and amber. It made my day :D

The arrowhead was fashioned by the storeroom attendant on 3rd shift. I've bought a few of his arrowheads, gave one away here previously, and traded my Delica SG PE for a few more :) He needed a good knife, doesn't get paid much, and his inexpensive SS Kershaw doesn't stay sharp for very long.

This young stone craftsman and skilled knife sharpener made this arrowhead from 150 year old colored glass  I imagine, knowing nothing of stone knapping, that this would be a pretty delicate operation to pull off succesfully. Kitty said that she and I had the only pretty green ones :)

To honor this young guys skill and decency (his name is Brian) I am giving away 2 pieces of his work, an arrowhead and small spearpoint pictured below the Kiwi and Balance. I'm not about to start collecting stonework, but figured if anyone could appreciate them it would be a knife nut ;) Maybe find a functional way to attach them to a stick ;)

All you have to do is respond to this thread with a minimum of 30 words, the winners will be chosen by random.org.

Just trying to spread the "wealth"

The black blade in the backround is obsidian, the green arrowhead is made from a pane of antique colored glass which came from a broken window

Well, I believe that random acts of kindness will usually get paid back in kind and as such each and every day I try every day to share something I have with others who aren't as fortunate. This is a philosophy I learned from my parents and one that I hope to pass on to my children as well! We would be a better society if we all tried this out once in a while. Nice story and thanks for sharing.

That is cool that you know someone with the patience and talent to make some real beauties! If the sh*t ever hit the fan, that kid will always have a way to cut or shoot something, that is of course, if he does not have a Spydie and a gun! :p

Please tell him that I think his arrowheads are pretty cool. Thanks for sharing. :D

Nice work. We find original points in our area including some believed to be over 20,000 years old. This is much older than the Clovis people from 10,000 years ago. The Clovis people left behind beautify crafted points named after Clovis, New Mexico where they were first discovered. The really ancient points and tools have been found at the Topper Site in Allendale County, South Carolina. Around my house we find pottery shards that are 3,000 to 3,700 years old.

The glass piece was a special effort by him which makes a special gift for me :)

The flint work is very, very nice, he knows his materials methods and techniques :)

That is cool gift, he did a great job. I'll pass on the freebie but it's great that you are passing a few of those pieces on.

hey charlie,
that's a very nice gesture on your part!
those look like some nice examples.
i've made and given away a few crude points.
a fellow i used to work with taught me the basics, and explained to me what kind of tools to make to knap the glass.
another coworker who was also interested gave me some obsidian and glass to practice with.
it can be very frustrating because as soon as you think your getting somewhere, you make a bonehead move, and the peice breaks in two....
good luck to all participants!
later,
don

It certainly takes some talent and skill as well as a huge amount of patience to make things like that. I bet that they would be pretty functional as well as being great pieces to look at as well. I hope that you pass on to the maker all of our admiration for his work.

Charlie, I really like the picture, almost a then and now theme. It sounds like you have made as much of an impression on Brian as he has you. It is nice to work with good people and it's just a bonus to share interests outside the 9-5. I have always been intrigued by blade knapping, the skill it must take is awe inspiring. I wonder if he "sees" the arrowhead or spear point in the raw material before he starts or if it is something that sort of transforms once the work begins? Tell him to keep up the good work and I would love to see more of his blades too.

Those are definitely some nice-looking points. I have found some natural ones around here, quite possibly Waxhaw or Pee Dee in origin given the area. That antique glass has a nice color and lustre to it, and obsidian is always nice. Kudos to the maker and to you for the generous offer.

Wow, nicely done! They look great and love your idea of "paying it forward". Wish everyone thought that way! :)

Have to give tons of credit to someone who can make something from nothing. The ability to pick up a rock, or piece of glass and turn it into something like that is a pretty great talent to have.

Very, very cool. I'm pretty good with my hands but that is a level of craftsmanship I don't think I'd be able to accomplish.

Thanks to the maker and Dbcad for the wonderful opportunity.
