Caly 3 lock up problem?

#1

Post by jacobwilson99 »

Hey guys, maybe you can recommend a step of action.

I've got a Caly 3 ZDP, and I LOVE it. However, since I've had it, the lockback has been a little funny. When I deploy the knife, the lock clicks strongly into position, however, when I release the lock, there is also a distinct click, as the tip of the rocker rubs and releases under tension with the notch in the blade. Doesn't sound healthy.
I have other lower end lockbacks (Delica, Endura) and the lock release is smooth and silent on those models. My friend's Caly 3.5 is also smooth and silent.

My question(s):
- Has anyone else had this problem?
- Is there any way I can fix this?
- Is this a big enough problem to send it in to Spyderco?
- Why, oh WHY must this knife be pin constructed? [6] :confused:

Thank you all for your comments.

The only thing I can think of that you could try. I wouldn't try it though. As the knife opens you can see the spot where the lock bar snaps into the tang. If you could grind it JUST A TINY BIT it may solve the problem. Of course you'd need a VERY small file. I wouldn't do it though. Another thought. I can see how this would be a little irritating but I'd think the lock is also a little more secure. There is another company that on their lockback knives they brag about a slight angle on the spot of the tang and lock bar that meet. It is angled so it it is a little harder to release but makes it harder to release by accident I think. But if you want anything done to it I'd suggest sending it to Spyderco.

If there is a distinctive click, then the end of the rocker might be catching on the mating surface on the back of the blade. My Caly 3.5 did this when it was new, but then it broke in with some lube. How old is yours?

If you've had it and used it awhile, and have good eyes and hands, you could remove the pivot pin, remove the blade, and very lightly and carefully polish the back locking surface of the blade with a spyderco white ceramic, just to smooth it, not to change it dimensionally. Of course, doing so might void your warranty.

The safe routes of course are to leave it alone, lube those surfaces and let it break in, or return it to Spyderco.

Have you put some oil and action through it? Watch Braveheart and open/close it a couple hundred times :) .

I wouldn't tool around with it personally. It has extremely tight tolerances and would best be in the hands of Spyderco W&R.

Perhaps some graphite lube in the lock well. I would not modify the lock at all. If you think there is a real issue, send it in to CS.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)
