wire clip vs. delica-style clip

#1

Post by edb »

I bought a new MeerKat about 3 weeks ago - love it. It's stayed clipped in my left front pocket for most of each day. I also carry my couple-years-old Delica clipped to the other pocket.

About 5 minutes ago, I pulled out the MeerKat, and noticed that the wire clip is now bent at least 1/4" away from the handle, and a little to the left. I don't recall catching it on anything, but perhaps I did.

My point is this: does anyone have opinions as to the relative durability of wire clips vs. the Delica/Endura/(other models too) clips? I *know* my Delica clip has gone through quite a bit more than whatever I accidentally did today to the MeerKat clip, and I doubt the Delica clip would ever bend to the extent that this wire clip (on the MeerKat) just did. Furthermore, I now doubt that I could get the wire clip to stay put now, because the 3 torx screws holding it in place don't seem to prevent it from moving around...<img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Oh well, I'll send the MeerKat back to Colorado, but I wondered what anyone thought about the relative strength/weakness of the wire clips.

I really don't like wire clips and a wire clip will keep me from buying a knife.Of the few I have had,I thought they caught on things easier than the standard clip.

I jus got a caly last week n already the wire clip is somewhat loose. However I used to own a pkal n the wire clip on that lasted a year with no real movement. Also I owned n Endura n that standard clip bent slowly over a couple months n eventually got bent even more when I got it caught on a cage. Eventually I lost the endura because of this. I would say each knife n its clips are more subjective to itself not across the board but I would also say the wire clips are prolly the weakest.

No wire clips tend to stand up better than a standard hourglass clip (Delica, Endura, etc). I've never had one bend but that doesn't mean it's not impossible.

I would call up Spyderco. You should be able to get a replacement clip cheap.

Join the WIRE CLIPS SUCK gang, be apart of a huge group. Thanks.
I'd rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

Well, while we're on the topic;

Image

That's my FRN Delica, about a month ago.

That's my Paramilitary, today.

I have terrible luck with clips. Never bent a wire one though, between a UKPK and a Sage 1. I love the wire clips.

Edit; lol, at least my blades are.centered.

I'm getting really good at rebending clips. :D

What is the record for zombie-thread resurrection on this forum? This one may have it at about 8 years.

It is interesting how things have changed since this thread was started. Now you can't say that you avoid buying a knife because of a wire clip, because there are so many knives that have a wire clip.

I think with either style of clip, you have to become aware of keeping where it clips from running into things and brushing up against things. After a while of carrying a knife, I can't remember the last time I caught a clip on something. I use wire clips and hourglass clips and they operate very similarly.

Well, it may be an 8 year old thread, but I'll throw my 2 cents in.

I wish every locking folder I own had a spyderco wire clip. I like the Spyderco tempered wire clips better than any clip I've ever had.

I'd settle for an "auto-lock" feature that locked any thread over a certain age. A year seems about right to me. Anything older could be linked to or quoted from, but not reopened.

As for the wire clip issue, it does pay to remember that the Meerkat was only the second Spyderco to use a wire clip. As with most early efforts, it was less than ideal. The mounting system on current models like the Calys, Sages, and UKPKs is definitely better and I strongly suspect the type and strength of the wire has improved as well.

All clips will bend, but wire clips can be re-bent back into place fairly easily, and multiple times. The standard clip is more likely to just break. I'm fine with either one, it's low on my priority list when deciding on a knife.
