Made a handle for my first mule!

#1

Post by ricechrispy »

I got an M390 mule a few months ago and have been waiting until I visited my brother in Hawaii to make a handle for it (he's a lot better with woodworking than I am). I gave him a COS-3 mule and we had a great time making the handles. The wood we used was a piece of Ipe flooring left over from my dad's flooring business. It's a little plain compared to a lot of the mules I've seen pictures of, but it has far exceeded my expectations of what we could do. The handle is a lot more contoured than it looks in the photo.

Also, while at Woodcraft, I noticed that they still had some of the Woodcraft mules. Needless to say, after the great time I had making the M390 mule handle, I got a Woodcraft mule and am really looking forward to making the handle for it.

IMO that is a very perfect scale for a mule. Simple and cleanly done. Congrats!

That's awesome. I think you did a great job on it. I'd love to try and do the same kind of thing!

Good job, looks very good! I'd say excellent for your first one! I've only made one so far, and while it is comfortable, mine doesn't look near as good as yours!

Wood on mules always looks tasty.
And your finishing job looks superb, love the flush mount pins in contoured scales.

Very nice job. Carry it. I bet you won't ever hear "did you make the handle?" I bet you will hear "where can I get one of those?"

Is that patina on the blade or is it the way the light is reflecting off the blade? The edge is shiny but the rest of the blade is darker.

Thanks for the kind words, all. Jacknifeh, it's not a patina. I took the picture at an angle with a flash. I think what you're seeing is the flash bouncing directly off of the edge.

I wanted to get my paws on a Woodcraft blank but I was too late... Is there any way to get one shipped to Europe?
(I know this is no buy-sell-trade forum, but I would like to be directed in the right direction)

very good for your first!

after you've actually made your first one, you come to appreciate the hard work of the individuals that make the custom, hand-made knives.
You should never have to ask yourself "do i really need another knife?" The answer is obvious...
