My preferred survival knives is:

or the S1 depending on how light I travel

And I always take an F1 with me as a backup:

For my hands the ergonomy of the handle is perfect, the convex grind and the Laminated VG-10 make it easy to sharpen even in the outdoors. No non-sense blades...

Here's mine, Koster MUCK 3V

Image

Slightly bigger than the ESEE 5 (which also looks like a great option)

For the absolute minimalist the Victorinox Farmer is hard to beat, it includes: a full size blade, saw, can opener, bottle opener and a reamed/punch. The only improvement would be the addition of a toothpick and tweezers.

This is why i like the Huntsman...all that plus scissors, tweezers and a toothpick. I always thought it would be cool if they made a fixed blade with all the fold out gadgets in the handle.

I like my Becker BK2.

For 70-80 dollars, you get a knife that can chop wood with it's 1/4" thick blade.

What I love about the Koster knives is their simplicity. Great choice!

I was looking at getting one of his bushcraft models in 3v, but opted for the spyderco version due to price.

When I think of survival I think of defense against bear attacks, etc...

Not just a knife that would be used to make fuzz sticks.

So, something large would be required. Gurkha kukri would be my choice.

Dude, if a bear gets a hold of you, the knife in your hand is the least of your concerns. You could be holding a samurai sword and your chances of survival are pretty slim, even if you're a samurai.

Dude, if I take that bears arm or leg off. I believe I'll survive.

LOL, if you're that badass then my hat's off to you because i believe the bear would have you on the ground mauling your head off before you could get one swing in.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

For every story of someone fighting off a bear someone else was disemboweled. Perhaps when many "fought it off" in reality the bear just decided not to murder them that day.

It's kinda like punching a shark in the nose or going for an eye when your being hit harder than the San Fransisco 49ers. Yea, the whole team.

The one thing humans are awesome at is thinking we are awesome and using tools. My 12 pound tabby pound for pound is a better fighter.
