Expected value of S90v CF Military

#1

Post by redii »

I've been kicking myself all day from not buying a s90v cf Military on ebay today. Final bid for the mint, never used, knife was $475. This knife just "does it" for me. I didn't pull the trigger because my first Military (g10, black combo blade) will literally be arriving tomorrow and I caught myself obsessing about the s90v cf for 5 bills. Is this price outrageous for this knife? Am I losing my mind justifiably? Am I nuts for been drawn way more to this knife than nearly any knife on knifeart.com?

Please talk me down :-)

you could wait for another (cheaper) military sprint with comparable steel then get custom CF scales for it.

Well it is a sprint run, with only 500 or so in existance, which contributes to the price. If you think it's worth it, then go for it before someone else get it! If not, I guess you can try elsewhere. But remember, few will be willing to part with theirs.

I really want that S90V though... It seems that Spyderco could sell the S90V CF all day if they offered this as a standard option. I'm not sure why most knife makers aren't using it, charging more if they must, as it appears there is much demand for it.

How often does Spyderco "re-run" a sprint identical to a prior sprint?

Pretty much never, once they're gone, they're gone!

IMO m390 is nicer. Takes a crazy aggressive hair splitting edge, and holed the razor edge a long time before it goes to the working edge. You may be able to get one for about 300 , MAYBE less , 2ndary market will average 400+. I reckon its a nicer investment. The price the s90v version goes for is outrageous to me

I love an crazy over the top edge. I guess the feeling stems from the nostalgia from when my grandpa used to spend hours with me sharpening knives and trying to determine how sharp it was by paper tests, shaving, etc. (all the stuff we see on youtube now that I'm looking for it). Good memories.

Are you saying that M390 takes a better initial edge than s90v?

Man, I love CF and S90V, but when I think of all of the other good things I could do with $500 bones, it's a no-brainer for me. No way.

There are more sprint runs in the works all the time. There is no way I would pay above street price for any knife, you will find something similar eventually.

Well it's up to you, M390 is quite a bit easier to sharpen, but S90V holds it's edge longer (provided you dont beat the crap out if it, as it lacks the toughness that M390 has). If you've seen the CajunBlaze's youtube videos, you will know his S90V CF Para2 is his #1 all time fav knife (and he owns Chris Reve knives, along with Strider, Microtech, and all of those EXTREMELY expensive semi-custom blades, and he likes the Para2 more then all of them!). So, do what you absolutely want to do, and dont be dissapointed!

mikerestivo: That's so true.

If I weren't so new to knives (I've been reading like a madman for 3 days only), then I would have more confidence to know "that I actually know" what I like. I look at a CR Sebenza with Micarta inlays for $440, and know that it's cool and respect the quality, but it just doesn't move me like Sypderco Militarys.

That being said, I have a g10,s30v military literally on the way (arriving tomorrow). I'm trying to figure out, tonight, a great complement knife to my new military so I can justify not buying the s90v,cf military for 5 bills.

They value somewhere between $100-800 I believe.

I would buy the M390 one coming out shortly. Heck, buy two of them and a steak dinner for the same price. ;)

Blerv: I'll probably do that. Knifeworks is sold out on the pre-orders for that knife. Do you know if anywhere else is selling the m390 sprint?

The CF Military in M390 is a dealer exclusive, though other dealers will receive collector club knives if they are number holders. As soon as these are released and hit the secondary market would be when you would find them for the cheapest. Expect to pay MSRP, maybe a little less, or maybe a lot more.

I'd search bladeforums first and other sites first, they'll probably be cheaper than ebay, but the price for them will continually rise (M390/CF). A forum member here did an edge retention test which resulted in about equal edge retention for S90V, 20CP, and M390, so this should be pretty close to the S90V Military.

I dont have real experience with s90v but I know both can take a hair splitting edge, m390 may/should get a bit sharper and Afaik, will hold initial sharpness longer. S90v will hold its working edge a bit longer. The m390 will be able to do some tougher tasks. When hardened to 62, it holds its edge better than s90v but this is production and is 61 ish

The Para2 M390 is attainable and the Carpenter equivalent is coming out mid year (cts-204p). Worst case I might consider one while you hunt for your grail Mili. Goodluck!
