Paramilitary 2 Carbon Fiber going rate.

#1

Post by Hooterville »

Is the going rate on these $350-$400 or is there some place I can purchase one a bit cheaper?
How many CF were produced?

Is there another Carbon Fiber release on the horizon?

I picked up a CF S90V Para 2 last year at the SFO. If I recall I paid just shy of $200.00 for mine. The prices you see are sadly going to continue because that is what the market is willing to pay for them. I always try to use MSRP - 30% as a base line to start when looking at aftermarket knives. If the asking price is 100% or more above my baseline it's a pass for me. Even paying 100% more than my baseline is difficult and takes a special knife for me to want to buy in at that price. The only chance you have of finding a S90V for "cheaper" would be to troll the trade forums and hope someone is not looking to price gouge. However the second those knifes hit the board they are usually gone in minutes. Good luck and welcome to the wide world of aftermarket knife buying. There should be a reality show on after pawn starts about this market.

Very occasionally I see one just under $300, but those are snapped up really fast. If you want one that badly...you are going to have to shell out.

I really wanted a S90V Millie...but $400 is the least that I have seen one of those go for these days, which is why I am happy the M390 CF Millie is coming!

As for your other quetion, hard to say. While none are on this year's list of advertised upcoming Sprints, when you consider the number and variety of sponsored runs lately, it's certainly possible some dealer or distributor might decide a CF Para 2 in something other than S90V, or S90V with a black blade, would be a fast mover and commission it.

You could always go for the 20CP version instead. The steel is on par with S90V, and it can be had for a lot less.

There was a CF S90V that just sold on Ebay for $385 plus $20 (gasp!) shipping. The buyer could have gotten one for $380 plus free shipping if he had checked the buy-it-now section of Ebay.

Pm 2 cf

I have been kind of looking for a CF PM2 or military in S90V for a little while.

I have kind of come to the conclusion that I will most likely be buying the M390 or CTS XHP versions as the S90V is too much of a premium.

I am hoping over time that people with the S90V blades will lower their prices as new steel comes on the market and they want to free up some money.

Is the S90V that much better than ZDP-189, CTS XHP, or M390 to warrant the premiums currently being sold?

Jeff

Just in case someone is looking for one or two or three, a guy is selling them on the bay. It seems like a decent price too. Just a FYI.

I think the textured CF is also a big part of the price jump.

And the problem with S90v, 20CP, M390, and any other similar top tier steel is that they all take a lot of time and wear out equipment during manufacturing. I don't think availability is the primary reason for the price jump.

It's stated that the ones on eBay now have flaws ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPYDERCO-KNIFE- ... _549wt_932 ), and while they're less then the rest they are still at a high premium.

What was the initial MSRP on these? Wasn't it around $289?

I don't remember the retail price, but my pre-order street price was $181.25 plus shipping.

If you want one don't torture yourself, there are a 100 guys like you for every knife listed for sale. Just buy one at the lower end of the going rate and be happy to have it.

My problem is that knowing it's worth that kind of cash I can't touch mine.

See them go for $285 a lot on forums, but never last more than 5 min.

You get one of the $279. fleabay ones? If so, let us know what kind of defects it comes with?
Hopefully none.

Hooterville,

I saw the guy's description of the knives and I think he was just trying to be overly conservative in how he described them. It looked like these were the last ones he kept for himself and I hope that if there are any issues they are minor. The more I thought about it the more I could have paid more and still had the same issue as the next person might not be so truthful in their description.

It has been a while since I have been looking for one and thought this was probably the best chance to get a CF variety.

Please let me know all the details when it arrives.
He has a couple of good recent feedback's about them, so I don't think they could be that bad.
I'm still hunting

I just got one of the 279 ones off ebay in the mail yesterday. I can't find a single thing wrong with the knife that would make anyone say it was used. There are no scratches on the blade, carbon fiber, or pocket clip. The knife is immaculate and if they guy woulda said it was new, I wouldn't have had any doubts about it. The lock does stick a little, but that is fairly common on the Para. I'd say go ahead and snatch one up if you're looking for one. If I had the extra money laying around I would buy a second one for sure.

ac700wildcat,

Thanks for the feedback on your recent purchase. I was hoping that would be the case. You make me feel a little better about the purchase, but I will have to wait and see on mine.

Hooterville,

You could have the same issue if you buy one from Bento Box Shop for $349 and they will not take it back and have you deal with Spyderco directly.

Thanks Again,
Jeff

My reaction to his description was the same. Example: slightly off-center blade. That's really not a defect at all. That price is a price you can feel pretty good about. I hope it all works out well when you get the knife in hand. :spyder:
