How to sharpen the convexed edge on the Lum Tanto?

#1

Post by chewy667 »

I just picked up a Lum Tanto Sprint and it's Awesome. I have a question on what is the best way to sharpen the convex part. I do have a sharpmaker if that helps but thats about it on my sharpening tools.

Sandpaper and a mouse pad is a popular method for maintaining a convex edge. Similar techniques as using a wooden block strop with backstrokes.
Just don't expect to get a razor level of sharpness. Nor would I suggest even trying to get one or put one on.
I would practice on some cheap knives first.

Im confused, are you saying you cant get one? Or that you shouldnt expect to get one on your first try?

I was un aware that the tanto had a convexed edge, is itthe whole edge or just the tip like on the Vallotton sub hilt?

^just the tip. even if you put a razor edge to me it kinda defeats the purpose and benefits of having a tanto grind in the first place for hard use.
other peoples uses wil vary of course where they may prefer a razor edge at the tip. But, it's gonna take a good amount of work getting it to that point.

I live about 20 min from the SFO, maybe I'll take advantage of the pro's when it needs sharpening.

Oh ok, so I assume the tip has a very steep edge. I thought you were saying convexed edges are hard and take forever to get to a razors edge.
