It is a tricky question. I have some cheap knives that I hate to get dirty (CRKT, Kershaw), but I also have several expensive (Extrema) blades that have been used quite alot. Its the first scratch that really hurts the most. After that the pain goes away quickly. For this reason I will typically try to find a slightly used blade if I really think it could become a user.

I don't think there is a price limit on use. It just depends on how much I like it. I carry and use all of the most expensive knives I own. But I don't abuse them, so I expect them to serve me well for decades. No reason not to use them unless resale is important.

As far as thrashing on a knife, I wouldn't want to abuse anything I paid more than $5 for.

Unless it has sentimental value where I'm afraid it might get ruined or lost I say use it. I carry everything from a $7 Opinel all the way up to a $425 small micarta Sebenza. I also usually have something on me that falls somewhere in the middle. Delica, Para2, Manix 2 and so on.

At this point in my knife "hobby" I buy a knife to use, and that is what I do. However, I have not paid more than $150 for one. It could be different story if I dished out $425 or so for a pocket knife. That probably will never happen.

I've never bought a folding knife without the intent of using it. The most expensive folding knife I've got is about $350.00.

The most I ever paid for a knife was $200.00, and I used that one.

You'd need to define "dirty". So far, the most expensive knife that I carry and use is an A.T. Barr One Eyed Jack that cost around $700. It's been used, among other things, to cut food in restaurants on several occasions. I consider that "getting it dirty", others may not. If I can ever find someone to rebuild a CF Stretch to my specs, that number may go up.

There is no limit. If i bring myself to buying it, it's gonna get used, especially if it was expensive. I can't blow big money on something that's gonna sit in a box and collect dust.

My price limit is based more on how much I'm willing to risk if I lose the knife... because I've lost my fair share of knives in the past, and that's really no fun. Looking at the knives I carry, the absolute maximum appears to be somewhere around $150, and I prefer to stay around $100 except for "special occasion" knives.

Yea it depends on the knife. Most of my treasured Spydies don't get beat on but they all get used.

Models currently in production and didn't cost me a king's ransom (FRN) get treated like tools. That doesn't mean whacking the spine with a rock or log though. :p

This is the biggest reason i haven't spent over ~$130 for a knife yet. I've only ever lost one knife that i was carrying and it was $50, and it still makes me sick to my stomach thinking about it, and it was 4 years ago. If i spent $900 on the 110V Strider SnG that i routinely lust over, and i lost it...i think i'd have to seppuku myself.

I don't have any knives that cost over $125, I pretty much use them all though. Some are reserved for lighter duty, like the Sage 3 Sal had sent to me. But they are all tools made to be used and that's what I do with them.

The quote in my sig line pretty much sums up how I feel about them.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

I used to 'collect' Spyderco knives. Models I'd own just for the sake of owning and never use, because they were too pretty.

Fortunately I came to my senses and realized that for me, its a giant waste of money.

I sold everything that wasn't being carried, and now only will buy a knife, if its going to be used regularly.

I pay the most for the knives I use the hardest.

I have several customs, but they are all designed/built for use, and none are particularly pretty. Some knives are more skewed toward being pretty...and if I were into that sort of thing, I would imagine that bringing myself to use them would be much more difficult.

I haven't bought any knife over 60 bucks over the last 7-8 years. I figure I can use them for whatever and if they break, I can buy a new one easier. Plus losing a $100 knife would eat me up. It's to bad to because there is alot of cool knives in that price range.
