Finally! I got a Navaja!

#1

Post by WalzAaronFFG »

Hey everyone,

Long time no chat. Once school started back up in the fall I was unable to buy knives every week and comment everyday. I have had a long break from my Spydie addiction and even had to sell a few of my non-users to fund necessities and entertainment for the semester. Unfortunately my Spyderhawk and Caly3.5 Super Blue both had to go.

I did my usual checkup on Cutleryshoppe.com and Howesknifeshop.com and saw my Holy Grail Spyderco Blade was FINALLY back in stock at CS. I have missed about 3 shipments of Navajas since I originally started drooling over it while watching a YouTube video review.

So I finally pulled the trigger and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my Navaja.

Any pics? I would love to get some up-close and personal shots going in this thread if anyone has some. I will post some of my own when it arrives!

Congrats on Navaja.
I hope you will enjoy using this knife. There we quite a few threads, when Navaja came out, but I really didn't see comments of people using this knife, only comments about Navaja as a collector piece.
For my taste Navaja's blade is too thick behind the edge, especially at the tip. I found it even thicker than blade on my Manix. Edge was sharpen at quite obtuse angle as well. Reprofing to 30 degrees didn't help me much. Fortunately for me Tom Krein is back to regrinding business and with his help my Navaja cuts to my liking, so the knife finally started to see more pocket time. But didn't replaced my Persian or Caly3.5.
Here my kreined Navaja

I really would love to see some comments about use. Does anybody except me using Navaja to cut on regular basis???????

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Roman, good to see you got a re-grind on yours. Looks like it's a real good slicer now. I've been carrying mine for the last few days really enjoying the way mine cuts now. I was off this Friday so I worked on sharpening it for a couple hours. I made mine a convex grind a while ago and it was better but now I've moved the convex up a bit and it slices even better now. It's still one of my favourites.

Wowza!

Nice pics guys. A few of these should have been in the Calendar competition this year.

I'm not going to lie, this knife is purely for fondling purposes. I can't carry a knife this large due to laws in my area, and I can't carry a knife AT ALL on campus. It is what it is, but I will still enjoy the **** out of this blade indoors.

Anyone have any issues with the Caracca (sorry if I murdered the spelling) mechanism breaking? I read that this issue was likely solved, but I'm just curious if anyone else has dealt with the issue.

My Caracca still functions and my Navaja was first batch. You will really dig the weight of the thing, but I agree with the others that reprofiling is the way to go.

After watching a Michael Janich video recently on the Navaja, it has moved to the top of my wish list. It's funny how videos and pictures will do that. It looks like a beast of a blade.

Rule #1:

Don't watch any video of Mr. Janich playing with a knife unless you already plan on buying it, or else you WILL be buying it.

Indeed... bought one and making excuses to get another one!!!

And, you will try the tip up "upside down" deployment shown in the video

Heck yea, I already have the upside down ring finger deployment mastered (well sort of, not MJ speed , but ok) with my off hand and am working on my stong side. I have broken almost all of my strong hand fingers at least once and a couple don't point in the same direction as they used to.
In fact they are so bad that if someone asks directions and I point to where they need to go, they will end up where they started from.
