Gayle Bradley question
Gayle Bradley question
I have this knife on order and have a question about it, specifically the weight of the knife. Most places give the weight as 5.5 ounces, with Spyderco doing the same. I did see one place that gave it a 5.3 ounce weight. Now I'm not concerned with the weight at all, unless it is a lightweight, and then I usually pass on them. I like a heavier folder because I like the solid feel it gives me. The reason I ask the question is because I know that Spyderco went from a solid liner to a cut out liner on this knife to get the weight down. Can someone tell me how much difference is the weight between the two. Read a short review where the reviewer claimed the cut out model was at least 2 ounces lighter than the original. That would go for 5.5 to 3.5, and I just don't see that as being accurate. Thanks for any help. :)

I've had both versions, and I'm also used to heavier folders like a Buck 110/112 and Emersons. When carrying and using them, I didn't notice any difference in the two GBs. My kitchen scale would no doubt list one as two-tenths of an ounce lighter than the other, but my hands and pocket couldn't tell it.

Thanks for the info guy's. I knew that it couldn't be two full ounces less, but the way it was said the reviewer appeared to think so. I don't think it was a mistake with the decimal placement either. So that makes me feel better about the knife. I don't know what exactly it is with the weight, but I will hardly glance at sub 5 ounce weight knives. I have had a Sebenza or two and I was alright with the 4.6 ounce weight, but liked the idea of 5 ounces in the Unnumzaan. Go figure.........I can't. I just know what pleases and what doesn't, for me! :)
Well while I'm at it, I might as well ask about the thick liners I hear about on the GB. Anyone ever put a mic. on them to get an exact thickness?

Honestly, I didn't pay any attention to how the knives balanced in my hand. I had other issues with the GB's "feel" that pushed them out of my comfort level so balance wasn't a concern to me.JNewell wrote:I don't have any of the later version - for those who have both, even though it's hard or impossible to tell the difference in absolute weight, can you feel a difference in balance (weight in the hand vs. blade weight)?

I have the 5.3 oz version of the Gayle Bradley. While an outstanding knife, it is still over 5 ounces and you can feel the weight right away when you pick it up. I will mention that you also notice the fit and finish when you pick up the knife and how wonderfully made it is. You can't go wrong with the quality of the Gayle Bradley with its M4 blade steel.
Since it isn't stainless you may want to pick up something to apply to the blade if it happens to sit in a drawer for awhile. I bought some Renaissance wax to apply to the blade when I shelved it for a couple months. Some good polish like Flitz or Metal Glo will help remove any light oxidation and shine her up for use when you are ready to carry it again.

I've actually found a product called Mother's Mag Polish to do an excellent job for polishing. Four or 5 years ago I bought a small container of Renaissance Wax, and use it on all my blades, and still have over half the can left! A little dab will do you is the word here!
This will be my 3rd Taichung Tawain Spyderco, and from the other two, I would be disappointed if it came with anything other than top of the line finish. :)
