Hey folks,
I finally picked up a sharpmaker 204 today. It's still in the package but intend to get it out and start figuring it all out later today. I hope it's the real deal like I keep hearing. thanks for the forum. dtsoll

Finally!!!!!!!
Yep, it's the real deal. It'll be frustrating at first until you get the hang of it, but if you stick with it the reward is sharp knives.
Watch the video several times before you start. Unless you're really masochistic, don't use the brown stones to reprofile a blade. Do yourself a favor and cheat- either get the diamond stones for the 204 or get a flat diamond hone to lay against a 204 stone for heavy metal removal.
Now, if you're really lazy like me, that belt sander in the garage comes in real handy for reprofiling work. ;^)
Never let minor details like the facts get in the way of telling a good story.

It is a beauty. I second Bimjo in recommending you get a coarse stone to go with it, as reprofiling a blade with the 204 can be a nightmare.
Toss a Blue DMT diamond stone with the 204 and you can sharpen anything you could ever want to put an edge on. I tried reprofiling the edge of a Queen D2 muskrat once, and the 204 simply takes forever. It's a great system, but they all have limitations.
Never underestimate the impossible.

Update on the Sharpmaker!! I watched the video 3 times, read the book 3 times and gave her a whirl. The first knife I tried (an old bucklite) I was very pleased with. I was so pleased I tried a fixed blade I have and presto, hair poppin, razor sharp. I could not be more pleased. This thing is the greatest!!! I should have gotten one a long time ago. Kudos to Spyderco for a first class sharpener. dtsoll

I started out with the older Spyderco 203, progressed to the current 204, and now all my once dull knives fear me. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>.
