A millie, a millie, a millie

#1

Post by TheMelonPopper »

Hey knife nuts! :D

I was just wondering from people with experience with the all famous millie.

Is it really, and i mean really big?

Is it too big? ;)

And before you ask, I would probably use it for hard-use tasks, and not really edc ( I mean thats what my new orange delica ffg is for:cool :) .

I am considering trading a Sage 2 for one ( obviously plus other things ) Would that be worth it?

Thanks, guys! :p

I think in a trade it would be about even. I think the sage 2 retails for a little more. I like my millies. They're not too big if that's what you're asking. It holds up well to what I've used it for. Give one a try I doubt you will be unsatisfied.

the millie is the knife that i EDC as my primary blade. i love the size and weight of the knife and i do not feel it is too large for me.
not sure what type of pants or shorts you wear, but in pants i wear 511's and for shorts, i wear dickies. so i have lots of pocket space for the millie.
as far as hand size, a glock 17 feels good in my hands, hopefully that gives you a feel for how big my hands are.

The Military model is one of my absolute favorites. When I first held one, I thought, who in their right mind would need a knife this big in their pocket? Like a woman's engagment ring (with a substantial carrot diamond mounted off of the ring) what "shrinks" with age, you quickly become aclimatized to the size and within 10 days the Military was as comfy to carry and use as a Caly Jr had previously. :)

Here is a comparison pic of my M4 Millie with CF handle scale, Endura 4, Sage 2 with G10 scale and Delica. The tip of the Millie was snapped off and reprofiled, so it's about 1/8" shorter than it should be.

The Military is a great knife. I don't really prefer it for every-day carry due to its size, but I do carry it from time to time.

The Millie used to look gigantic to me, until I actually got one. It is large, but also very slim and light weight. I carry one frequently.

Do u have a trade potential already? Because Id say the person is trying to rip you off. The Sage II goes for more, so I wouldnt trade it and other stuff for a millie. To be honest Id keep the sage and just save up for a millie.

Depends on you. The Military is "too big" for me, but that's because my preferred carry method is loose in my left back pocket and it simply won't fit and it's sometimes "too big" for its creator, for purely legal reasons.

I agree that it does seem to get smaller after you carry it a while. Agree with Deacon on it being too large to "loose carry". If you clip it, you really don't notice the size as much. It is actually lighter than you would think. If I could only have one knife, it would be the Spyderco Military.

I took a long time to warm up to the Military but have come to feel that in spite of its outward size it is one of the best general purpose folders. However, depending on your idea of "hard use," the Military may not make the cut. The blade was designed to be a superb general purpose cutter and slicer, but it is NOT a folding prybar. The tip in particular is quite thin, which is excellent for many needs but not ideal for what some people call "hard use."

The first knife that brought me back into collecting was the AFCK. Even though I've always loved Spydies, that Benchmade just does it for me. I got one after a long search (this was before the were making LEs every 5 min, but after the D2 one was disco'd), and I sold it like a couple days later. It was huge and, while awesome, was just not something I could see myself carrying and I don't keep things I won't carry.

I'm telling you this b/c this scared me away from big knives. After that, I wouldn't go over 3.75" and even that was pushing it. I never even considered the Military b/c it's HUGE on paper. Like super HUGE. But then the Ti/G10 M4 came out and I though, what the ****. This is a good combo if I don't like it, I can easily sell it w/out losing any money.

Well, I still have it and I'll never let it go. The Military shrinks in the hand and pocket like no other big knife. It's amazing. Arguably the BEST knife period for it's size IMO as long as your looking for a knife and not a prybar.

Get one, you won't be sorry. But keep the Sage 2 :) . they are awesome as well. If you do trade, I certainly wouldn't add anything else on top either unless you're trading for a frame lock.

My vote would be to keep it and pre-order the M390/CF Millie from Knifeworks. Then, just put $20/month away until it arrives and it'll be paid for by the time it's released next year. Either that or pick up a used S30v liner lock for under $100. I just saw one sell for $75.

Edit: If you want hard use, for for the Gayle Bradley, or wait for the Tuff. Or buy all of them :) .

A military is definitely one of the more "sinister" spyders out there. Its not huge, but its got a wicked taper and the whole thing is slim, flat, and light. Its definitely not a "tactical blade" by most traditional definitions.

Overall its a great knife and theres lots to love. The only two things about it that consistently irk me are the lack of tip up (yes I know we've been over this) and the fact that there is a LOT more handle than blade..... and there is a lot of blade. I think in a lot of ways the Para2 would make a better EDC, I know I prefer it, simply because its less intimidating and while its not that much smaller I always feel like its a little more nimble. The military is just a tad long for working with the tip sometimes. Its just a nitpick though because its a GREAT knife. If you're a spyderlover you almost have to own at least one. :P

I carried my orange Millie quite a bit this summer in cargo shorts and jeans. It clipped nicely and didn't feel as big as it is. Even at Boy Scout camp, I had quite a few "Wow" moments when I whipped it out and thumbed it open - so it can be a bit intimidating in mixed company (knife folk and non-knife folk).

Personally, I wouldn't trade the Sage2 for a Millie. The Sage 2 is a great knife on its own right.
